Ramen shop at City Hall Station: couple's shoyu & butadon, Mentsuru

Mentsuru City Hall Branch is a ramen shop near Exit 10 of City Hall Station in Jung-gu, Seoul. Visiting as a couple, the writer ordered the signature shoyu ramen with extra noodles and extra chashu plus a butadon (pork rice bowl); the food arrived in under 10 minutes, and the rich broth and tender chashu stood out. With Deoksugung Palace a 5-minute walk away, Mentsuru City Hall Branch suits anything from a quick lunch to a date around Deoksugung's night opening.

Jongno 3-ga bakery: afternoon butter aroma & open kitchen, Munhwa

Munhwa Bakery (문화제빵) is a bakery on Donhwamun-ro in Jongno, Seoul, about a 5-minute walk from Jongno 3-ga Station, that bakes its bread in-store every day and sells it only on the day it is made. The writer made a sponsored afternoon visit, followed the smell of butter inside, watched the bakers in the open kitchen, named garlic bread, coffee bread and onion bagel as the most popular items, and tasted the bread right after leaving. Munhwa Bakery is a good Jongno 3-ga stop for an Ikseon-dong date or for picking up bread as a gift.

Gamjatang after a hot Yangjaecheon walk in Seocho: Chomu Gamjatang

Chomu Gamjatang is a gamjatang (spicy pork bone soup) restaurant near Yangjaecheon Stream at 59 Nonhyeon-ro in Seocho, Seoul. Worn out after a heatwave walk along Yangjaecheon, the writer ordered a small gamjatang with a ramen noodle add-on, rice and a cider, and remembers the whole-bone-sized pork bones and the ugeoji (dried cabbage greens) dipped in mustard sauce. With plenty of parking in front, Chomu Gamjatang is easy to drive to and works well for both family meals and solo dining.
