Gangnam Station dakgalbi dinner ahead of the 7pm line: Dakgalbijeon

Dakgalbijeon Gangnam Branch is a dakgalbi (spicy stir-fried chicken) and potato pancake restaurant on the 2nd floor at 54 Seocho-daero 73-gil in Seocho, Seoul, near Gangnam Station. On a dinner visit with a friend, the writer ordered jjolim dakgalbi (simmered-down dakgalbi) with a cheese rice cake add-on, a perilla leaf potato pancake and icy nurungji liquor, and the restaurant was so busy that a long line formed shortly before 7pm. Dakgalbijeon Gangnam Branch is most satisfying if you arrive a little early and pick your add-ons with the first order.

Korean BBQ in Jeongja-dong with grilled kimchi and bracken: Eunbakjip

Eunbakjip is a retro-style naengsam (flash-frozen pork belly) Korean BBQ restaurant in the Prugio City 3rd complex shopping arcade in Jeongja-dong, Bundang, Seongnam. At Eunbakjip, the writer grilled flash-frozen pork belly on the griddle with kimchi, seasoned bean sprouts and bracken, then finished with anchovy noodle soup with fried tofu; generous side dishes, plenty of sauce combinations, an outdoor coat rack and a 5,000 won meal voucher for waiting guests stood out. For an easygoing spot to grill naengsam with kimchi in Jeongja-dong, Eunbakjip is a solid choice.

Yeoksam, Gangnam Chinese restaurant eggplant fritters: Jjamppong Jijon

Jjamppong Jijon Yeoksam Branch is a Chinese restaurant in Yeoksam-dong, Gangnam, Seoul, a six-minute walk from Gangnam Station Exit 3, where you pick your jjamppong (spicy seafood noodle soup) spice level. On a weekday evening the order was jjamjjamyeon, eggplant fritters and Sichuan sweet-and-sour pork, and the two fried dishes stood out so much that a second visit for the eggplant fritters followed two days later. With a self-serve corner offering unlimited rice and a private room that holds about 15 people, Jjamppong Jijon suits both solo diners and group dinners.
