Let me introduce Sokcho Sulppang (속초술빵) and its honeycomb ice cream, my go-to makgeolli bread spot in Sokcho's Jungang Market that I keep coming back to.

Why I always stop at Sokcho Sulppang in Jungang Market
Sokcho Sulppang is the sulppang (steamed rice-wine bread) stall I head to first, every single time, inside Sokcho's Jungang Market. Jungang Market is a must-stop whenever I travel to Sokcho, and browsing is fun, but honestly I think I keep going back for the food. And the place that stops me in my tracks every time is Sokcho Sulppang.

Next to Sokcho Sulppang there's the honeycomb ice cream corner, and look, there's a Gukdae Potato (국대감자) corner now too!

How long is the line at Sokcho Sulppang?
The line at Sokcho Sulppang is always long on weekends, but the weekday I visited was a bit quieter. It has already been featured on several TV shows and is a famous Jungang Market spot, so on weekends it's best to expect a wait.

This time too, the moment I arrived at the market, I headed straight for the Sokcho Sulppang shop.

What does the makgeolli sulppang at Sokcho Sulppang taste like?
The makgeolli sulppang here is steamed fresh in a huge steamer, so it's moist and fluffy. Standing in front of the shop, the smell of freshly steamed sulppang drifted out of the big steamer. It looks so soft and pillowy that you just can't walk past.

As you'd expect from Jungang Market's famous makgeolli bread spot, customers kept coming without a break.

Sokcho Sulppang is known for its traditional sulppang, fermented with raw makgeolli (Korean rice wine). Unlike ordinary bread, it has a moist, soft texture that's really appealing.
With a subtle makgeolli aroma, it's a taste that people of all ages will like. Looking into the steamer, I saw big loaves of sulppang cut into easy-to-eat pieces.

The sample piece had peas and red beans dotted all through it, which looked so homey, and you could feel the warmth just by looking at it. I could see why so many people recommend it as Jungang Market's best makgeolli bread.

How to pack, store and eat Sokcho sulppang
The sulppang is wrapped one bag at a time, so it's easy to carry back to your accommodation, and at home it's also delicious with a quick warm-up in the microwave.

This time I bought 4 bags of sulppang to keep in the freezer. I packed plenty again to share with my family. I cut it into small pieces and store it in the freezer, and eating it as a breakfast substitute is so convenient and tasty that I bought 4 bags. And there's one more item you can't skip when you buy at Sokcho Sulppang.

Is the Sokcho honeycomb ice cream worth trying too?
Sokcho Sulppang also sells honeycomb ice cream (soft serve) in a yellow cup. That's the Sokcho honeycomb ice cream. I ordered one cup of soft serve in a yellow cup, and after walking around the market on a hot day, it was pure bliss. The smooth, rich milk flavor filled my mouth and the coolness lifted my mood.
This place is especially famous for its Sokcho honey ice cream.

The sweet honey and the ice cream go together so well that kids and adults alike would enjoy it.

Enjoyed together with the sulppang, it's a perfect combination.

Why Sokcho Sulppang stands out among Jungang Market snacks
Jungang Market has plenty of food like dakgangjeong (sweet crispy fried chicken), squid sundae (stuffed squid) and shrimp fritters, but for the writer, the warm sulppang and cold ice cream at Sokcho Sulppang are more memorable. On a Sokcho trip you run into so many market snacks, but sometimes a warm piece of sulppang and a cold cup of ice cream stay with you more. So for me, Sokcho Sulppang isn't just a bakery, it's a place that makes travel memories.

The taste is the same every time I visit, so I naturally end up going back. If you come to Sokcho, do stop by once. You'll feel for yourself why it's so famous as Jungang Market's sulppang spot.

It's also a spot you can't leave off a Sokcho bakery tour, so I especially recommend it to bread lovers. If you visit Jungang Market, enjoy the many snacks there, and be sure to try the sulppang and honeycomb ice cream from Sokcho Sulppang. It'll be a Sokcho gem you keep thinking about after your trip ends.
