Mandong Jegwa is the Hongdae bakery I stop by every time I'm near Yeonnam-dong. This weekend I was near Hongdae with family, so I picked up some delicious bread from Mandong Jegwa. As always, everyone in the family was totally happy with it haha!
Where is Mandong Jegwa Yeonnam Branch, and how does ordering work?
This Hongdae favorite, Mandong Jegwa Yeonnam Branch, is a 10-minute walk from Exit 3 of Hongik Univ. Station. The word "bread" is written in huge letters at the storefront entrance, so there's no way you'll miss it haha.
On weekdays you can reserve the specific bread you want at Mandong Jegwa Yeonnam. Also worth noting: if you order one drink per person at the nearby Ediya Coffee, you can eat the bread you bought from Mandong Jegwa right there in the café.
The shop itself isn't huge, but there's such a wide variety of bread that walking in, the fragrant smell of fresh bread makes the whole choosing process fun.
At this Yeonnam-dong favorite, you line a tray with wax paper and pick whatever bread you like. For certain breads, though, you don't put them on the tray — instead you tell the staff at the counter how many you want. Those are the ones with a yellow sticker: garlic baguette, cucumber baguette, onion bagel, basil tomato, and cappuccino bread.

If someone asked me what to absolutely buy at Mandong Jegwa, I'd pick the signature garlic baguette without hesitation!!!! It's piled high with garlic cream, a taste you really can't find anywhere else, so I always order it whenever I visit Mandong Jegwa.
The onion bagel isn't your usual chewy bagel — it's crispy on the outside and packed with onion cream cheese inside, so this is another one I'd recommend haha. The cappuccino bread lets you enjoy the coffee flavor straight up, so if you're someone who likes mocha bun-type breads, definitely give this one a try.

Kaya coconut (₩4,500), injeolmi (rice cake-style, ₩3,500), and red bean cream (₩3,500) breads come individually wrapped,
I really wanted to try the chestnut red bean mugwort bread (₩7,200) too, but the fig campagne (₩5,800) caught my eye that day so I went with that instead.
The Emmental bread (₩5,200) sounds like it's packed with cheese, true to its name, so it's always on my list too haha. Honestly the jalapeño ciabatta (₩4,800) and corn mayo (₩4,900) are on the list too lol. There's really nothing at this Hongdae bakery, Mandong Jegwa, that I don't want to try.
I've had the sweet potato bread (₩3,500) before, and it was packed with sweet mashed sweet potato — so good! The cheese mallangi (₩1,200) and rusk (price TBD) are also cheap enough to grab as a snack without a second thought.
Chestnut bread (₩4,900) and yakbap bread (rice cake-style bread, ₩3,800) are the two I always buy every time I come to Mandong Jegwa! The salty soboro (₩3,600) seemed like it would combine the best of salt bread and soboro bread, so I figured that one would be tasty too.
This great-value Yeonnam-dong bakery favorite has so many more types of bread beyond these. With over 20 varieties at minimum, anyone can find something that matches their taste — that's what makes it so appealing.
Eating the chestnut loaf and garlic baguette at home
Walking home with delicious bread packed in a white bag with "bread" printed on it in big letters! My steps got lighter and lighter thinking about how soon I'd get to eat it hahaha.
Once home, I decided to start with the chestnut bread! It's loaded with big chunks of chestnut, so it turned out to be a really clean, delicious loaf.
The chestnut pieces reach all the way to the edges of the loaf!
Along with the chestnut bread, I decided to try the garlic baguette too lol.
This Yeonnam-dong bakery favorite, Mandong Jegwa, doesn't hold back on the garlic cream sauce.
This Hongdae bakery favorite, Mandong Jegwa Yeonnam Branch, lets you enjoy delicious bread at a great price. Next time I visit, I'm definitely taking home more good bread.
