Sinnonhyeon café, lemon cake & matcha pistachio latte: Upper and Under

In short

Upper and Under is a large three-floor café in Gangnam, Seoul, tucked into the alley behind Gangnam CGV between Sinnonhyeon and Gangnam stations. On a late weekday evening, Upper and Under was still full; at the 2nd-floor counter the writer ordered an einspänner, a matcha pistachio cream latte, lemon cake and a matcha canelé, then enjoyed them in the warehouse-style seating on the 1st floor. With six cream lattes and cakes at 8,500 won, Upper and Under is a well-rounded Gangnam dessert café.

Upper and Under is a great café to visit near Sinnonhyeon Station. It has lots of coffee options and plenty of desserts, so I spent a sweet time at this big Gangnam café.

Where Upper and Under is near Sinnonhyeon Station, and how the floors work

Upper and Under is tucked inside the alley by Gangnam CGV, between Sinnonhyeon and Gangnam stations. Walk up the alley and it's about 10 minutes on foot from the subway exit.

The 1st floor is seating only, with an old-warehouse feel, and the counter is on the 2nd floor, so you order up there. The café goes up to the 3rd floor, so think of it as a very large Gangnam café. Even late on a weekday evening it was full of people, which shows how popular it is.

Upper and Under drink menu: six cream lattes

Here's the menu board. The café must get a lot of foreign tourists, because the menu is written in both Korean and English, which I thought was a nice touch.

The signature drinks are cream-topped lattes, six kinds in all: einspänner, salted caramel, pistachio, matcha oat, matcha pistachio and coconut matcha, so you can pick to your taste. If you join the Naver receipt review event, you get one free financier, but only for the first 10 groups, and I kind of thought that was too few.. haha

Gangnam cake case: cakes at ₩8,500

Here's the dessert menu. The tiramisu and the lemon cake are both ₩8,500, and they sit in the fridge case.

The raspberry cake and the yangzhi ganlu (mango-pomelo-sago) cake are the same price, ₩8,500!

The baked goods are displayed on the other side haha. There are cheesecakes too, but when we went only the hwangchi cheese (aged yellow cheese) one was left. The ube Basque cheesecake looked so good, what a shame...!!

Baked goods prices: financiers, canelés and more

The peach pie (₩8,300) stands quite tall, and on the chodang corn madeleine (₩4,500) you can slightly see the corn kernels haha

There are also plain financiers (₩3,800) and hwangchi cheese financiers (₩4,500)!

Financiers are usually little rectangular bricks, but the hojicha pecan (₩3,700) and pistachio (₩4,500) ones are long stick-bar shapes, which I found fun.

The matcha canelé and Earl Grey canelé are both ₩4,500, and they're quite a bit bigger than they look in photos, so keep that in mind!

Einspänner, matcha pistachio cream latte and lemon cake: how they tasted

I ordered at the 2nd-floor counter, came down to the 1st floor and took photos of the coffee and cakes from Upper and Under.

Two coffees and two desserts on a 1st-floor table

We ordered two drinks and two desserts, all different, haha

Einspänner in an Upper and Under logo glass

The einspänner comes in a glass engraved with the café name, UPPER AND UNDER. The cream is generously dusted with cocoa powder, so good!!

The matcha pistachio cream latte has a lovely texture from the nutty pistachio bits, and you can really taste matcha's signature bitterness.

The lemon cake is piled with tangy lemon cream, and the canelé is filled with plenty of bitter matcha cream. I thought it was an excellent choice not to pick only sugary desserts haha

The tart lemon cream went well with the soft, crumbly sponge.

Upper and Under is a big café near Sinnonhyeon Station that's great for good coffee and desserts. Next time I'll try other coffees and desserts! haha
