Saetgang Station rice cake shop, watching tteok made: Ojo Manggaetteok

In short

Ojo Manggaetteok (오조망개떡) is a traditional handmade manggaetteok shop on the ground floor of Hongu Building, between Yeouido and Saetgang stations in Yeongdeungpo, Seoul. Manggaetteok is a rice cake wrapped one by one in mangge leaves. At Ojo Manggaetteok, the writer tried manggaetteok for the first time, found it properly chewy even when cut with scissors, and watched staff roll the rice cakes into rounds in one corner of the shop. Verdict: the bojagi-wrapped gift set from Ojo Manggaetteok is heavy and packed full of tteok, which makes it a good gift.

If you're hunting for a great tteok (Korean rice cake) shop in Yeouido, I highly recommend Ojo Manggaetteok near Saetgang Station. I tried manggaetteok for the very first time here, and it was so chewy and delicious! Thanks to this place, I'm slowly learning what makes manggaetteok special these days haha

Where is Ojo Manggaetteok? Between Yeouido and Saetgang stations

What is manggaetteok?

Ojo Manggaetteok specializes in handmade manggaetteok. Honestly, I didn't really know what manggaetteok was, so I asked GPT. Apparently it's a rice cake wrapped in smilax (mangae) leaves and steamed, and the famous version has a glutinous rice skin with red bean filling. The leaves are used when steaming because they keep the cakes from sticking together and hold in moisture, which helps them stay moist longer haha

Ojo Manggaetteok takes pre-orders, and since all the tteok is made the same day without preservatives, eating it on the day you buy it is the most recommended.

Menu: gift sets and single items

The menu board at Ojo Manggaetteok. There are gift sets, but also plenty of single items, so it seems great for office workers nearby to grab as a snack. Return-gift sets are possible too, so it'd be perfect for handing out to a group! hahaha

Ojo Manggaetteok started from a mother's heart, and it's a manggaetteok shop that puts generous care into its ingredients for both health and flavor.

Inside the shop, detailed displays explain the products and packaging.

Bojagi gift wrapping

Ojo Manggaetteok wraps its tteok gift sets in beautiful bojagi (traditional wrapping cloth), which makes both the giver and the receiver happy, so it's a great pick for gift sets in Yeouido.

The packaging feels so elegant that it would make a lovely gift.

In Gyeongsang province, people used to exchange manggaetteok to ask after each other and look after one another's health. Even today, wouldn't anyone love to receive delicious tteok as a gift? haha

You can watch the tteok being made in the shop

At one side of the shop you can watch manggaetteok being made, and the round little cakes looked so cute haha

They also sell candied walnuts (hodu jeonggwa) made in the shop.

They sell yakbap (sweet rice with nuts and jujubes) and mugwort tteok too,

and you can also grab ginger syrup and oranda (a crunchy grain snack) as snacks. Nice!

They sell brightly colored seolgi (steamed rice cakes) too, so if you work in Yeouido, it'd be nice to drop by Ojo Manggaetteok and pick up a piece of tteok as a snack.

Heading home with the gift set

On the way home with gift set No. 1 from Ojo Manggaetteok in its lovely bojagi wrapping! It was surprisingly heavy, which really stood out.

Carrying the bojagi-wrapped gift set No. 1

Ojo Manggaetteok is a manggaetteok shop made by nature: no coloring, additives or preservatives, and everything is made and sold the same day. Thumbs up!

Lunar New Year is far off, but I took one of the templates from the shop anyway haha

With its elegant bojagi wrapping, Ojo Manggaetteok makes both the giver and the receiver happy.

The texture of the manggaetteok I tried

Each piece is wrapped in a smilax leaf, which gives Ojo Manggaetteok a distinctive look.

I couldn't wait, so that same evening I took out two kinds of manggaetteok and tried them.

They were so springy that even when I cut them with scissors, I could really feel the chewiness.
