Korean BBQ in Seongbuk, Seoul: whole pork jowl at Jayeon Sutbul Hwaro

Jayeon Sutbul Hwaro (자연숯불화로구이), Dolgoji branch, is a charcoal-grilled pork restaurant near Exit 6 of Dolgoji Station in Seokgwan-dong, Seongbuk-gu, Seoul. Fresh from their wedding, a newlywed couple ordered 2 portions of whole pork jowl, 1 portion of whole pork belly, a dosirak (lunchbox rice) and doenjang-jjigae (soybean paste stew). They loved the 8,900 won price for 150g of pork belly, the fresh lettuce wraps and the friendly owner. The verdict: Jayeon Sutbul Hwaro serves quality meat for the price and is worth recommending for Korea National University of Arts group dinners.

Seokgye Station Korean BBQ on a Monday: gabrisal and mushrooms, Hanam

Hanam Doeji Jip Seokgye branch (하남돼지집 석계점) is a pork BBQ restaurant in Nowon, Seoul, a 7–10 minute walk from Exit 1 of Seokgye Station, where staff grill the pre-seared meat from start to finish. After work on a Monday, the writer ordered one portion each of pork belly and gabrisal (pork shoulder cap), mixed mushrooms for ₩5,000 and doenjang jjigae (soybean paste stew). With side dishes of wild garlic leaves, kimchi, salt and wasabi and the staff doing all the grilling, the table could focus purely on conversation. Hanam Doeji Jip Seokgye branch is a good fit for anyone near Seokgye Station or Kwangwoon University who wants Korean BBQ without the work of grilling.

Jonggak Station Korean BBQ, family dinner with both fathers: Yukrab

Yukrab Jongno (육랩 종로점) is a charcoal-grill beef and lamb restaurant on the 3rd floor of a building near Exit 4 of Jonggak Station in Jongno, Seoul. On a weekday evening, four of us, including both of our fathers, shared the 3-person mixed set (89,000 won) plus 2 extra portions of jingalbisal (beef rib finger meat) and yukhoe (Korean beef tartare). The set included doenjang stew (soybean paste stew) and vegetables for grilling, with free vegetable refills. With private rooms and a separate window-side hall, Yukrab Jongno is a solid choice for family gatherings and company dinners.

Uijeongbu sundaeguk after work, sundae-free bowl: Yetnal Gyeongseong

Yetnal Gyeongseong Sundaeguk Nogyang Branch is a newly opened sundaeguk (Korean blood sausage soup) restaurant on Dongil-ro in Nogyang-dong, Uijeongbu. After work, the writer and her husband ordered spicy sundaeguk without sundae (11,000 won) and an 8-piece plate of pyeonyuk (boiled sliced pork, 5,900 won), with an opening-event sticky sundae, sour kimchi and pickles from the self-serve bar on the side. Thanks to a huge, gamey-free bowl of spicy sundaeguk and pyeonyuk good enough to order a second plate, Yetnal Gyeongseong Sundaeguk Nogyang Branch made a satisfying dinner or light drinking spot.

Uijeongbu pork galbi and LA galbi after a CGV movie: Manpo Galbi

Manpo Galbi Uijeongbu Main Branch is a pork galbi (marinated pork ribs) restaurant on Beomgol-ro in Uijeongbu, Gyeonggi. On the first day of the Chuseok holiday, a couple had dinner at Manpo Galbi after a movie at CGV Uijeongbu, ordering 2 servings of handmade pork galbi and 1 serving of LA galbi, and were happy with the yukhoe (Korean beef tartare) and stir-fried kimchi side dishes plus the free naengmyeon (cold noodles), 1 per person with a meat order. With mild seasoning and a generous basic spread, Manpo Galbi is worth recommending to anyone looking for a good-value Korean BBQ restaurant in Uijeongbu.
