In short

I stopped by a bakery near Jongno 3-ga that was on Running Man. I was so curious how a place that made it onto Running Man would turn out,

Where is Munhwa Bakery?
Munhwa Bakery (문화제빵) is near Jongno 3-ga Station, in the stretch between Ikseon-dong and Seosunra-gil. The address is 65 Donhwamun-ro, Jongno-gu, Seoul.
Munhwa Bakery sells only bread baked that day. Whatever doesn't sell is said to go to people in need, such as children who miss meals, elderly people living alone, people with disabilities living at home, free meal centers, homeless shelters and social welfare facilities.

The exterior is lovely, blending in with the green leaves reflected in the window. In Jongno-gu, old-fashioned interiors sit among modern buildings, so just walking around puts me in a good mood.

Munhwa Bakery opening hours and how entry works
Munhwa Bakery is open daily from 11am to 7pm. The inside is small, so only 2 groups go in at a time, which keeps it less crowded and makes it easy to choose in peace.
The shop is so small that I think that's why it's takeout only. Even with 2 groups at a time, turnover is fast. When I went, every kind of bread was in stock. So happy *.*

What I bought at Munhwa Bakery
I took away three things from Munhwa Bakery: coffee bread, walnut bread and peanut bread. Reading reviews, I noticed everyone recommends a different bread. That must mean they're all good, right? After agonizing for a long time, I settled on these three.

The breads sit pre-sliced in bags on the tray on the left, so you choose, tell the staff, and they hand it over right away. Pickup is super fast.

Then they put it in a paper bag like this. Resisting the temptation to eat on the street was so hard 😙

The moment I got home, I washed my hands at lightning speed and dug in.

Munhwa Bakery coffee bread (₩5,500): how does it taste?
The coffee bread is ₩5,500, and since so many reviews strongly recommended it, I tried it first. A lovely coffee aroma drifted out as soon as I opened the bag, and after one bite I immediately understood why everyone praises it.
Within the fluffy, soft texture typical of bread baked that day, a refined, not-overpowering coffee flavor gently wrapped my whole mouth. It isn't too sweet but has a subtle addictiveness, and the more I chewed the more savory depth I tasted. With a hot americano or a glass of milk, it made a perfect home café dessert.

Munhwa Bakery walnut bread (₩3,500): is it good without cream?
The walnut bread is ₩3,500, and it's tasty with just the bread itself, no cream, so it's the one of the three I really recommend. Even by looks alone it announced "I'm nutty!" When the owner sliced it, I could see big, fresh walnut pieces generously studded through the crumb.
One bite and the bread was crisp yet chewy, then the walnuts crunched and that nutty richness burst across my mouth. There was none of the stale smell old walnuts get; it was clean and mild, the textbook example of a "healthy and delicious bread."
This place doesn't skimp on ingredients. It's nutty the more you chew, and easy on the stomach.
My parents took a bite of the walnut bread and said this, praising it without holding back. Unlike the coffee bread and peanut bread, it has no cream inside, yet it's delicious on the bread alone... I really recommend it.

Munhwa Bakery peanut bread (₩3,800): how does it taste?
The peanut bread is ₩3,800, a cream-filled bread that's crunchy like streusel (soboro) outside and chewy inside. With the crisp crumble and peanut bits on top, it looked mouthwatering.
The moment it hit my mouth, a rich, nutty and sweet peanut flavor rushed in. Peanut can turn dry and heavy, but Munhwa Bakery's own secret touch made it soft and moist. The peanut bits I chewed along the way, together with the cream, doubled the fun of eating it. It would be great as a kids' snack too, and I thought nothing beats it when you want a sugar boost and nuttiness at once.
Is Munhwa Bakery worth a stop on a Seosunra-gil or Ikseon-dong walk?
If you're planning a stroll around Jongno 3-ga, Ikseon-dong or Seosunra-gil, the hottest spot lately, do stop by Munhwa Bakery for bread that makes your whole mouth happy, along with a calm, old-fashioned mood. Thanks to the owner's warmth behind the nutty smell of baking, it's a place worth visiting that makes your steps even happier.
I'm definitely going back soon to stock up on the garlic bread I couldn't get this time, and the other kinds too!
