What is the atmosphere like at Munhwa Bakery in Jongno 3-ga?

Munhwa Bakery felt less like an elaborately decorated large bakery and more like a shop that's been loved in the neighborhood for a long time. These days there are so many large café-style bakeries, right? Pretty interiors, tons of bread varieties, places where you can enjoy coffee too — Munhwa Bakery was a bit different from that style.

I actually liked that it felt more focused on the bread itself! Personally, when I go to these old bakeries, my expectations go up for some reason lol. I walked in thinking, 'What kind of bread here could possibly be so good that it became this famous?' 👀

And true to its reputation, it had the feel of a place that draws crowds. I found it while searching keywords like Seoul's top three bakeries, Seoul bakery pilgrimage, and life-changing bakery, but visiting in person, the atmosphere was much more comfortable than I expected.

Munhwa Bakery's white bread: how good are the basics?

Whenever I go to a bakery, I always make sure to check out the toast bread. Breads with special ingredients matter, but if a place makes good toast bread or basic bread, I end up expecting good things from the whole lineup. So at Munhwa Bakery too, I picked up some toast bread!

Toast bread is great for eating at home in the morning or making a simple toast, right? It's good with butter or jam, and also good for just tasting the bread itself, so I picked it as a basic menu item. Personally, I liked that it was plain and not aggressively sweet. It felt like the perfect thing to have with coffee in the morning!

Good value: picking several breads at Munhwa Bakery

One thing I personally liked about Munhwa Bakery was the value for money! These days, going to a bakery, each bread can be pretty pricey, so you get surprised at checkout even after picking just a few 😂 Especially with a famous bakery, there's the preconception that it'll be even more expensive.

At Munhwa Bakery, I felt relatively little pressure when I wanted to try several kinds of bread. For people like me who don't just eat one or two breads per visit but pick several to share, this seems especially good!

I had the walnut bread~ then the peanut bread~ then the toast bread too~ Picking several menu items like this made comparing each flavor fun haha. Considering taste plus value together, it was quite a satisfying visit 👍

Why people call Munhwa Bakery their favorite bakery

What I felt after trying Munhwa Bakery is that instead of 'super flashy bread,' this is a place that's good at making bread you keep wanting to eat, at its core. A lot of trending breads these days look really pretty and have unique ingredients, but sometimes what you end up craving is plain bread after all. Munhwa Bakery was exactly that kind of place.

The walnut bread is nutty~ the peanut bread is plain with a good nutty flavor~ and the toast bread is basic and comfortable to eat! Trying all three, I could kind of understand why people have sought this bakery out for so long.

Especially if you're chasing Seoul's top three bakeries or life-changing bakeries, I think this is worth stopping by at least once. If I'm ever nearby again, I want to try more of the breads too!

Munhwa Bakery's peanut bread: worth trying?

And the other menu item I picked was peanut bread! Since I'd already chosen walnut bread, I was curious about peanut bread too so I brought that along as well lol. If you like nut breads, you'll probably relate — peanut's distinctive nutty aroma pairs surprisingly well with bread!

The peanut bread had a nutty flavor that came through more the more I chewed, which I liked. It wasn't a flashy or intense flavor, so it was the kind of bread you keep reaching for. It was better the more I ate it than in the first bite or two! This seems like the kind of bread that's really good to buy and eat one at a time at home haha.

These days there are so many desserts that cost several thousand won each, so picking just a few breads can add up fast, but at Munhwa Bakery being able to pick several kinds was a plus. I think it'd also be good for people looking for a good-value bakery 💸

Munhwa Bakery's walnut bread

The first thing I picked at Munhwa Bakery was walnut bread! I like breads with nuts in them, so whenever I see a menu item with walnuts or peanuts at a bakery, I get interested right away haha.

Eating the walnut bread, I could really feel the plain yet nutty flavor. I liked that the bread itself wasn't too aggressively sweet! At bakeries these days, sometimes even one piece of bread is so sweet you have to have a drink with it, but Munhwa Bakery's bread felt relatively comfortable to eat. I especially liked how the nutty flavor came through when you bit into a walnut 🥜

Personally I love this kind of plain bread, so my satisfaction was high! I felt it would pair well with coffee, and also be good for a simple breakfast.

Best of the three: Munhwa Bakery's walnut bread

This time I tried walnut bread, peanut bread, and toast bread, and personally, the walnut bread stuck with me the most 🥜🍞 If you like nutty flavors, I recommend starting with the walnut bread! And buying a few to eat one at a time at home seems good too.

These days, famous bakeries often get visited just for their pretty visuals, but Munhwa Bakery was the kind of place where after actually eating there, I thought, 'ah, so this is why people keep coming back.' If you're looking for an old-school bakery or a life-changing bakery in Seoul, visit at least once! For fellow bread lovers, it'd be fine to add to your Seoul bakery pilgrimage course 😊 Next time I'll have to try other breads too!

Munhwa Bakery = plain bread + nutty nut bread + good value, all in one bakery! This bakery pilgrimage was a success 🍞✨
