Hoengseong hanu butcher: chuck flap and flat iron on yard charcoal
In short
Hoengseong Hanu Jeongyukjeom (횡성한우정육점) is a butcher shop on Munhwacheyuk-ro in Hoengseong-eup, Gangwon, that specializes in Hoengseong hanu (Korean beef). At Hoengseong Hanu Jeongyukjeom, chuck flap (salchisal) and flat iron (buchaesal) were picked straight from the display case, along with Korean pork neck, then grilled over charcoal in the yard. Verdict: Hoengseong Hanu Jeongyukjeom is a handy stop on the way to a campsite or pension, with small individual packs so you can buy just what you need.

Where is Hoengseong Hanu Jeongyukjeom, and what are its hours?
It's at 10 Munhwacheyuk-ro, Hoengseong-eup, Hoengseong-gun, and you'll see it as you head from Seomgang River toward the sports complex. Hours are 7am to 8pm, and it seems to be open every day unless there's a notice~
Hi, it's Seoreunhana! I had business in Hoengseong, so I stopped by a butcher shop to pick up some Hoengseong hanu and grill it in our yard. This one, Hoengseong Hanu Jeongyukjeom (횡성한우정육점), sells only Hoengseong hanu. They say it started in 1979 and has handled hanu processing, retail and wholesale in Hoengseong for 40 years~
Inside the shop: atmosphere and meat display
The interior doesn't look like a butcher shop at all, haha. It looks like a café. You can pick your meat with your own eyes, or ask for something specific. The shop is really clean and well kept, and honestly the display alone has plenty to choose from. It looks like a whole cow was taken apart and laid out by cut so it's easy and nice to look at! That's how I'd put it, haha

Everything you need to make the meat taste even better is ready here, at this Hoengseong hanu specialist. Sauces, pastes, seasonings, scallion salad to eat with the meat, vegetables, you name it. From what I saw, most customers stop by before heading to a pension or campground.

Where to buy Hoengseong hanu: why Hoengseong Hanu Jeongyukjeom
Look at that glowing color of Hoengseong hanu. When it comes to hanu in Korea, Hoengseong is number one, right? When people visiting Wonju ask me where to buy Hoengseong hanu and want a trustworthy, good place, this is what I tell them. It's an old shop that everyone knows and a certified business you can trust, and each cut is neatly packed so the condition of the meat is clearly visible. Plus it comes in small, individually packed portions, so you can buy exactly the amount you want right away. I think that's why people seek out Hoengseong Hanu Jeongyukjeom!

Choosing between flat iron and chuck flap
Just look at this flat iron, haha. Where else do you get to taste meat like this? And even though it's Hoengseong hanu, the price is hardly different from regular hanu. Buying directly in Hoengseong, I guess you get top-grade hanu at a good, reasonable price. My partner can't take their eyes off top blade and flat iron, our favorites. Everything else looks delicious too, but we figured we should take home the usual ones.

Ribeye, yukhoe and boiled beef suyuk too
Flower ribeye (kkotdeungsim), soup beef and raw short ribs. There's aged beef too, plus yukhoe (beef tartare) and sashimi you can eat right away. Everything looks delicious, so picking just a few hurts my heart. I wish I could hurry up, earn lots of money, and say "from here to here, all of it, please," haha. I'd love to feel like a chaebol heir splurging at a luxury department store, but food tastes better in moderation, so I picked a moderate amount.
On the other side there's brisket, and the interesting thing is that suyuk (boiled sliced beef) and head suyuk sit side by side. It's suyuk made with Hoengseong hanu, and the price is really kind. I really wanted to bring that home, but I'll try it on my next visit! Today I was getting barbecue meat to grill, haha

Hoengseong hanu brand certificate and gift packaging
The Hoengseong hanu trademark approval certificate and designation papers are displayed right where you can see them, so you can buy with more peace of mind. They can also pack it for you, so it works as a gift too. The packaging containers are really classy, aren't they~

Chuck flap and flat iron grilled over charcoal in the yard
Finally, time to taste the meat we bought! They sell pork neck too, so I brought some. We're both originally pork people, haha. I figured if the beef wasn't enough we'd eat the pork neck too, and the price was really kind so I grabbed it, but the beef alone filled us up~ so we skipped the pork neck that day, haha

The good thing about eating outdoors is that you can use charcoal, haha. I think it'd be great for camping. We haven't been able to go camping much lately, so we often grill in the yard like this, and good meat really does taste best with good charcoal. It's why we insist on charcoal even when it's this hot, haha

The top blade was literally insane~~ The smell, the sizzle~~ I could instantly tell why everyone goes on about Hoengseong hanu, haha. "Melts in your mouth and disappears" is a phrase made for meat like this. Hoengseong hanu is number one even among hanu, and I think we can eat it in the yard at such a kind price because the butcher shop sells it at a kind price. It's hot out, but the meat goes down so easily~~

A handy stop on the way to Hoengseong campsites and pensions
The flat iron is the kind where "glowing" comes out on its own. The trimming is so well done too, it felt like being treated at a top-tier hanu restaurant. If you're camping around Hoengseong, don't buy meat at a supermarket, I recommend stopping here. Hoengseong hanu is great, and for those who prefer pork, they also have fresh, nicely trimmed Korean pork, haha. Whether you're heading out for a day trip, valley swimming, a pension or a campsite, don't just pass through Hoengseong. It would be really nice to visit Hoengseong Hanu Jeongyukjeom at least once and get tasty Hoengseong hanu at a kind price!
