Noryangjin gyudon restaurant's summer set with mini soba: Gyudongjip

Gyudongjip Noryangjin Main Branch (규동집 노량진본점) is a Japanese rice bowl restaurant specializing in gyudon (beef rice bowl) on Manyang-ro 14ga-gil near Noryangjin Station in Seoul. On a summer visit, the writer, a regular at Gyudongjip, ordered two gyudon sets that come with mini soba (cold buckwheat noodles), plus karaage, shrimp tempura and sweet potato cheese korokke, and enjoyed the juicy karaage, the savory beef gyudon and the cool soba together. Gyudongjip Noryangjin Main Branch is good value and tastes great, so it's a gyudon spot in Noryangjin worth returning to.

Seocho lamb skewer spot with green grape highball: Banpo Yangkkochi

Banpo Yangkkochi (반포양꼬치) is a charcoal-grilled lamb skewer restaurant on the B1 level of a Sinbanpo-ro shopping arcade near Express Bus Terminal in Seocho, Seoul. We ordered 3 servings of lamb skewers, beer, a green grape Yantai highball and kanshao shrimp, then added 1 more serving because the lamb was tender, juicy and had no gamey smell. Banpo Yangkkochi is an Express Bus Terminal lamb skewer spot worth recommending for skewers dipped in ziran (cumin seasoning) and paired with a highball.

Korean BBQ in Gongdeok with naengmyeon wraps: Gogikkun Kim Chunbae

Gogikkun Kim Chunbae Gongdeok Direct Store is a Korean BBQ restaurant near Gongdeok Station in Mapo, Seoul, where you can grill hanwoo (Korean beef) and handon (Korean pork) together. With the hanwoo-handon set for two, half-and-half naengmyeon (cold noodles) and kkakdugi (radish kimchi) fried rice, the hanwoo sirloin and pre-grilled pork were dipped in meljeot (salted anchovy sauce) and wrapped in the noodles, served half in cold broth and half in spicy sauce. For meat, cold noodles and a fried-rice finish in one filling meal, Gogikkun Kim Chunbae Gongdeok Direct Store is a good fit.

Dine-in Hongdae chicken: bone-in Cheese Basasak & tteokbokki, Goobne

Goobne Chicken Hongdae Red Road is a Goobne Chicken restaurant on Jandari-ro 2-gil in Mapo, Seoul, with bar seating, outdoor tables, a self-serve bar and QR ordering. The writer ate in and ordered one whole bone-in Cheese Basasak chicken and Maekdal Tteokbokki (sweet-spicy rice cakes); the freshly served Cheese Basasak was juicy and tender and made a sweet-salty match with the Maekdal Tteokbokki. If it's your first Cheese Basasak, eating it in at Goobne Chicken Hongdae Red Road with Maekdal Tteokbokki is worth a try.

Hongdae chicken restaurant with grilled chicken feet: Ttukdak Hongdae

Ttukdak Hongdae is a dak hanmari (whole chicken hot pot) restaurant near Hongik Univ. Station in Mapo, Seoul. After an escape room, two friends ordered almost the whole menu: chicken hot pot for 2, house-made noodles, flame-grilled chicken feet, minari (Korean water parsley) shrimp pancake, gabri pork bossam and a risotto to finish. The 9,000-won chicken feet stood out for their size, along with the chewy rice cakes and the pancake fried to order. Ttukdak Hongdae is a satisfying choice when two people want to share lots of dishes.

Yongsan tteokbokki with crumb-dipped rice cakes: Hyeonseonine

Hyeonseonine Yongsan Main Branch (현선이네 용산본점) is an instant tteokbokki (spicy rice cake) snack bar on Hangang-daero 39-gil near Sinyongsan Station in Yongsan, Seoul. The writer ordered instant tteokbokki for 2 at the mildest heat level, mixed fried snacks and butter garlic fries, dipped wheat rice cakes in the self-bar tempura crumbs and finished by cooking fried rice in the pan themselves. Verdict: with tempura crumbs sprinkled into the broth, Hyeonseonine's tteokbokki tasted exactly like the snack bar outside an elementary school back in the day.
