So many people! Even though I went slightly after lunchtime, the place was completely packed and I couldn't even take photos inside. During peak hours there's probably a wait too.

Bultina Kkomak Jjamppong menu and prices

Looking at the menu board, the star dish at Bultina Kkomak Jjamppong Dongtan Namgwangjang Branch is, of course, cockle jjamppong. Both cockle jjamppong and cockle jjamppong rice were ₩11,000 each.

You could also choose the spice level for the jjamppong — level 1 default → 2 → 3 → 4 — so those who like it spicier can order to their own taste.

Jajangmyeon was ₩8,000 and kids' jajangmyeon was ₩4,000, so it looked like a fine option to visit with a child too. Tangsuyuk was small ₩17,000 / medium ₩22,000 / large ₩27,000, and fried dumplings were ₩6,000! On top of that they also had beer, soju, erguotou, and soft drinks.

What level 1 cockle jjamppong and jajangmyeon taste like

That day, we ordered cockle jjamppong and jajangmyeon at Bultina Kkomak Jjamppong Dongtan Namgwangjang Branch.

First, the dish I was most looking forward to — cockle jjamppong! True to its name, it's loaded with cockles, so it felt like it added extra seafood depth compared to a regular jjamppong.

Spicy cockle jjamppong with cockles
Broth of level 1 spice cockle jjamppong

The broth was spicy with a nice savory depth, so it paired well with the noodles, and the cockles added a fun chewy bite too. Personally, when I eat jjamppong the broth is the most important part, and this broth itself was rich and spicy enough that it's the kind of taste you'd crave when looking for Dongtan jjamppong.

I ordered the basic spice level, and rather than being overly harsh, it had a tasty kind of heat that wasn't too much. Of course, if you like spicy food, bumping it up to level 2–4 would be great too.

And then the jajangmyeon we ordered alongside! The noodles and black bean sauce blended nicely together, making for a solid, reliably tasty bowl.

Since jjamppong is a spicy dish, ordering jajangmyeon alongside gave us the fun of alternating bites between the two. If you're visiting as a pair, ordering one cockle jjamppong plus one jajangmyeon seems like a great combo. It felt more satisfying than sticking to just one dish, since you get to enjoy two different flavors.

Is Bultina really the Dongtan hit everyone talks about?

Looking at the exterior of the store, I got the strong feeling this is a place that's been drawing crowds for a long time. The notice posted at the entrance also emphasized things like preparing fresh ingredients every morning and cooking to order.

True to its name, they push cockle jjamppong as the flagship dish, giving it a slightly different feel from a typical Chinese restaurant. Even if you're just having a bowl of jjamppong, if you like dishes with seafood or cockles in them, this should suit you well. If you're like me and enjoy a spicy Dongtan jjamppong, it's worth trying the cockle version once.
