My boyfriend and I had only done an escape room together once before. Feeling confident, we picked a slightly harder theme that time and it turned out to be tougher than expected — we failed. After that one failed escape, we both lost interest in escape rooms for a while and just kind of forgot about them.
Then, on a date after a long while, we were trying to figure out what to do. It's been raining a lot lately so we wanted an indoor date rather than something outdoors, and escape rooms came to mind. This time, determined not to fail again by picking something too hard, we decided to look for a beginner-friendly spot and visited "Cube Escape Hongdae Branch," choosing to try the Pyramid theme. Curious whether we'd actually make it out this time, we headed off on our Hongdae escape room date.

All 8 themes at Cube Escape Hongdae Branch and their difficulty levels
Cube Escape Hongdae Branch has a total of 8 different themes.

They range from relatively easy themes suitable for playing with kids, to genuinely scary horror themes, all the way to high-difficulty escape challenges.

I think the big advantage here is that anyone, from total first-timers to seasoned escape room fans, can pick a theme that matches their taste and skill level.
Secret of the Pyramid: how the beginner couple's escape went

Out of all the themes, we chose "Secret of the Pyramid." My boyfriend has always liked pyramid and Egypt-related stuff, and since we really wanted to actually succeed this time and finally feel the fun of escape rooms, we picked a theme with low difficulty and low fear.
The result: we escaped successfully using 2 hints, with 7 minutes left on the clock! The theme's story wasn't hard to follow at all, and the flow felt natural, so even as beginners we could make our way through without much trouble. Since the difficulty was on the easier side, I thought it'd also be fine to enjoy with kids.
Is Secret of the Pyramid a good escape room for beginners?
At first I was a little worried about failing again, but the puzzles turned out to be less difficult than I expected, and the process of finding clues one by one and solving them was genuinely fun. After we escaped, my boyfriend and I talked about trying a slightly harder theme next time.
This time we started with a beginner-level theme, but next time we're planning to bump up the difficulty and give it another go!
