Yeongjong Sky City beef BBQ: galbisal and flat iron platter, Hanmaeum

Today I visited Hanmaeum Jeonguk Sikdang Yeongjong Sky City Branch (한마음정육식당 영종하늘도시점), a popular Korean BBQ spot in Yeongjong Sky City. You can order both beef and pork here, so it works for beef people and pork people alike!

What is the atmosphere like at Hanmaeum Yeongjong Sky City?

The restaurant is on the second floor, with a waiting area out front. When we walked in, the staff kindly showed us to our table, and the whole place felt spacious and pleasant.

The tables were big and comfortable, and the ventilation was good, so there wasn't much of that typical BBQ smoke or smell. Nice!

Side dishes and the self-serve corner

We booked ahead, so the side dishes were already set out when we arrived. If you want to start eating quickly, I recommend reserving. The banchan (side dishes) were the kind that go well with meat, and steamed egg, doenjang jjigae (soybean paste stew) and jjolmyeon (chewy spicy noodles) come as standard. I ordered the jjolmyeon without realizing it was already included, and the portion was so big I was totally flustered.

Grab any extra side dishes you need from the self-serve corner. It was neat and well kept, which I liked. Aprons, plates and toddler spoons are also available.

How much does the menu cost at Hanmaeum?

Beef cooks quickly, so you can eat right away, which I loved. The more we grilled, the juicier it got, and every bite had a rich, nutty flavor. So good.

The doenjang stew that comes as standard

I was happy that doenjang jjigae comes included. The broth was deep and savory, and I emptied a bowl of rice in no time. It has small vegetables and tofu inside. It went well with the meat too, and it was satisfyingly hearty.

Which cuts come in the whole-cow set?

The whole-cow set includes jin-galbisal (prime rib finger meat), galbisal (rib meat), bone-in galbi, buchaesal (top blade) and woosamgyeop (thin-sliced beef brisket), so you can try lots of cuts in one go, and it's fun picking between them. The meat was cut into bite-size pieces, which made grilling and eating easy. The texture differed a little by cut, but overall it was tender, not tough, and I was happy with it. It was juicy too, and each piece had that nutty, savory flavor.

How big is the sprout jjolmyeon?

We ordered extra jjolmyeon, and when it arrived I was shocked at how much there was. It was enough for several adults to share, loaded with fresh cabbage, lettuce and other vegetables for a crunchy bite. The tangy sauce and chewy noodles worked well together, and it cleansed the palate between pieces of meat.

Is it okay with kids? The playroom and CCTV

The most memorable part of eating here was the kids' playroom. You can check it through CCTV, with the screen showing three angles, so it's easy to see where your child is playing. We could actually see kids running around happily, and the parents seemed relaxed while eating.
