Mangwon bakery basil crunch that's best on day two: Boulangerie Copain

In short

Boulangerie Copain is a bakery in Mangwon-dong, Mapo, Seoul, on Huiujeong-ro on the way to Mangwon Hangang Park. A couple who have been regulars since 2017, nearly 9 years, took home basil crunch (₩6,000), a croissant (₩4,500), a brioche loaf and chestnut bread (₩7,000 each) and lemon cake, and found that the basil crunch peaked on day two, once the cream cheese had soaked in. If you're in Mangwon-dong, Boulangerie Copain's basil crunch is a must-try.

Boulangerie Copain Mangwon: the basics

Boulangerie Copain's Mangwon location is a bakery on Huiujeong-ro in Mapo, Seoul, open 10:00–22:00. There's no dedicated parking, and you can only pull over briefly right in front of the shop (just enough time to grab your picks and pay).

It's also famous for its baguette sandwiches from Sogeumjip (소금집), and honestly whatever you buy — basil crunch, croissant, baguette sandwich, angbutter (bread with sweetened butter) — is delicious, so go in with high expectations 😋

This is the bakery my husband and I never skip whenever we're in Mangwon-dong.

Where exactly on Huiujeong-ro?

Huiujeong-ro is the road on the way to Mangwon Hangang Park. There are so many famous, delicious restaurants and cafés on this street, but tucked behind a tree next to an apartment complex, if you spot a faint but huge

빵! ("Bread!")

sign, that's Boulangerie Copain.

A regular since 2017, nine years running

Way, way back when I lived in Yeonnam-dong, I used to go in and out of Mangwon-dong and Mangwon Hangang Park practically every day. That's when I first tried bread from Boulangerie Copain, and ever since, I've made sure to grab something in hand every chance I get.

I started buying bread here in 2017, so I've been a steady customer for almost ten years now 🍞

Small loaves, and the fun of tearing them apart

Brioche loaf ₩7,000, chestnut bread ₩7,000. Honestly, big loaves feel like a lot to commit to, so I usually pass — but Boulangerie Copain's loaves are smaller and sold uncut, so there's real fun in tearing off pieces!

Basil crunch ₩6,000 — what's inside?

Croissant ₩4,500, basil crunch ₩6,000. The croissant is above average too, but honestly the famous basil crunch is really special — inside this large bagel-shaped bread, basil pesto and cream cheese are spread throughout, with onion woven in between.

Why day two beats day one

On day one, the bread's crispness is still there. But on day two, the basil and cream cheese have soaked all the way into the bread —

heavenly. 🥹

Every time I meet friends in Mangwon, I send them off with one in hand, and I buy one for my parents too — everyone loves it! Truly recommended!

Lemon cake with the baby, and croissant remixes

Every other bread we've tried has exceeded expectations, of course. The lemon cake even comes in cute packaging, so I often buy it to eat with my baby! 🍋🍋 The icing isn't overdone, just lightly brushed on top, which I love even more.

This bakery is so good at croissants that they've got plenty of variations too!

Today's haul: bread for the baby and bread we love! The basil crunch gets sliced and wrapped, and everything else comes individually packaged, so it's nice and tidy.

The baguette isn't on display — just ask the owner

The baguette is actually what Boulangerie Copain is famous for. The baguette sandwich is such a popular item that it sells out fast, and I've heard famous sandwich shops nearby use Boulangerie Copain's baguettes too 🥖 The baguette isn't on the main display case — just ask the owner and they'll get it for you. Cutting is available, of course.

20–30% off every day after 19:00

Apparently there's a time sale every day after 19:00..! 20% to 30% off, seriously? Mangwon-dong residents, lucky you. A life of strolling out for an evening walk and picking up tomorrow's breakfast bread — I've never lived it, but I can imagine just how good it would be.

There's also banana pudding, palmicare tart, and cream bread kept refrigerated in the showcase! I've had the palmicare before — I remember it being clean and not too sweet.

The vibe, and the verdict

Boulangerie Copain feels small but is actually spacious — even with several people picking out and packing bread at once, I've never once felt crowded.

Turns out the owner was once featured on Master in the House (생활의 달인). Now it all makes sense — no wonder everything is made so well. Please keep baking for years and years, sir!

Verdict: if you're in Mangwon-dong, go to Boulangerie Copain. Eat the basil crunch.
