Having worked in a company for over 10 years, I've visited perfume workshops a handful of times through company programs and other activities. Some of those were fairly famous, pricier workshops in Gangnam, so naturally I found myself comparing this visit to Muhwawon Bukchon Perfume Workshop with those past experiences.

It's a great spot to swing by if you're planning a date or an outing around Bukchon and Anguk. The shop is on the 3rd floor of a building, and even the exterior gave off a clean, atmospheric feel.

Inside Muhwawon: a scent studio that feels like a Jeju café

When people think of a perfume workshop, they often imagine a big space packed with many people making scents all at once, but Muhwawon felt different. It wasn't a huge space meant to hold dozens of people — it felt much more like a room where a small number of people could take their time.

From what I could tell, it looked like it could fit around 10 people at most, which meant the whole experience felt calm rather than chaotic or rushed.

I especially loved the interior. It had the vibe of a lovely café in Jeju, so even though I was there to make a perfume, just looking around the space itself was enjoyable. And I think the atmosphere during the experience actually matters a lot at a perfume workshop — here, it was quiet and calm, which helped me focus on finding my own scent.

How the perfume-making class works for first-timers

Another reason Muhwawon impressed me was how systematically the whole perfume-making process was organized.

The basics were laid out in a printed booklet, and each seat had a tablet and headset ready. Since you could listen to a basic explanation individually through the tablet video, it seemed like there was little chance of missing something even if several people were doing the experience together.

After getting the basics from the video, you move on to actually choosing scents, and if there was anything confusing or you needed help along the way, you could ask the perfumer right away. What impressed me most was how the perfumer explained everything one by one in a calm voice.

Overall, the combination of a well-organized manual, video explanations, and one-on-one help from the perfumer meant that even someone making a perfume for the very first time could follow along without much trouble.

Smelling the scent strips to find the notes I liked

After the basic explanation, I started properly searching for scents I liked. Various scents were arranged along the wall, and I picked the ones I liked and brought them to my seat in a clear acrylic tray to begin blending.

If you haven't studied perfumery professionally, this is actually where things can get a bit overwhelming — it's hard to know which scents to mix with which, and in what ratio. Even for me, each individual scent smelled nice on its own, but how they'd turn out mixed together felt like a completely different question. That's where the perfumer's help became really important.

After picking at least 6 scents that matched my taste, I started properly combining them with the perfumer. Based on what I'd chosen, I talked about which notes I wanted to bring out more and what kind of feeling I wanted the perfume to have, and got advice on what ratio to mix each scent in.

What was especially fun was discovering that scents that were all lovely on their own didn't necessarily go well together once mixed. When that happened, we adjusted the ratios little by little and checked again, or added another scent. After changing the ratios and checking so many times, it stopped feeling like 'an experience where you pick scents you like' and started feeling more like a process of really learning what kind of scent person I am.

Whenever I found it hard to decide on my own, I asked the perfumer what scents people tend to prefer these days, what's the safest all-around choice, or whether there was a signature scent unique to this place worth recommending. She then suggested new scents beyond the ones I'd originally picked, so I got to try out several different combinations.

Thanks to this process, deciding on the final scent turned into a pretty enjoyable back-and-forth. It felt less like 'making a perfume' and more like 'a time spent discovering my own taste together with someone.'

I made a car diffuser, my sister made a perfume

This time I visited with my younger sister — I made a car diffuser while she made a perfume. It was nice that you could choose a diffuser for your car in addition to a perfume, so you could pick whatever suited your taste.

Apparently you can also make a diffuser for indoor use, not just for the car. If you want to try making a scent but don't usually wear perfume often, making a diffuser instead seems like a good option.

Packaging at Muhwawon: nice enough to give as a gift

I've been to several perfume workshops, but this was the first time I'd seen packaging done with this much care. This is my finished car diffuser, wrapped up — the packaging itself looked so upscale that I felt genuinely happy holding the finished product.

Since it's a scent you made yourself, there's something special about it that would make it a good gift for a partner, friend, or family member. Especially on a date, making a scent that reflects each other's taste together could turn into a memorable date course quite different from the usual café or restaurant outing.

Can I remake my scent later? Formulas kept for 2 years

Another thing I really liked was that they keep your scent notes on file for 2 years in case you want to remake the scent you blended later. Rather than the experience just ending once, it felt thoughtful that they keep a record so you can find that scent again later if you loved it.

Since it takes a fair amount of deliberation over multiple scents to make one in the first place, you might want to smell it again after some time has passed — this system seems especially useful for a return visit.

When I visited, I also saw a mother and daughter making perfume together. The mother in particular looked like she was genuinely enjoying the process of picking and blending scents.

So this isn't just a perfume workshop date for couples — it seemed like a great experience to try with friends, sisters, or a parent, in all kinds of combinations. It's a good choice when you want to try something a little different from your usual routine.

The whole experience took about 1 hour 30 minutes. At first, I worried that picking and blending scents might take too long and leave me short on time, but in practice it was neither rushed nor overly long — just the right amount of time.

Since it moves through the basic explanation, choosing scents, blending, adjusting ratios, and the final decision in order, I never felt pressed for time. The whole process felt well organized from start to finish, systematic throughout.

There was also a restroom inside the workshop, and it was kept clean, so it was easy to use comfortably during the experience.

A different kind of date in Bukchon, Seoul

Having tried several perfume workshops myself, this visit to Muhwawon Bukchon Perfume Workshop felt a bit different from simply picking a few scents and mixing them. I liked being able to experience it in a small group in such an upscale, atmospheric space, and I was satisfied with the process of first learning the basics through the booklet and tablet videos, then finishing the scent through direct conversation with the perfumer.

What I enjoyed most was that it didn't stop at just picking scents I liked — it was about finding out which combinations worked when different scents were mixed, and discovering my own taste in the process.

Even for someone like me who's been to several perfume workshops before, this was a genuinely fun experience with a different approach to scent-making than I'd had before.
