Why did I choose a terrarium as a home-decor piece?
I keep several creatures at home, including guppies and turtles. As the number of aquariums gradually grew, one wall started to look like an aquarium display, and taking care of anything else felt like a bit much. So I became interested in decorative pieces that let me enjoy a sense of nature just by looking at them.
I had seen wall-mounted terrariums at special exhibitions and fairs. I remembered how they changed the mood without taking up much space, so this time I chose a terrarium kit I could make at home myself.
Was it difficult to make with a child?
The kit came with soil, moss, and plant components, and the instructions were not difficult. My child and I made it by touching the soil and arranging the pieces, and once we placed them one by one in order, it was finished more quickly than I expected.
There were several options, which was nice because I could choose one to suit the size of the space and my preferences. Some kits also include tools such as tweezers, so I thought even a first-time maker could give one a try.
My child enjoyed touching the soil and arranging everything by hand. It did not feel like too much to make together, but it ended so quickly that my child was a little disappointed.
Where did I put the finished terrarium?
I placed the finished terrarium in front of the aquarium. With the green plants and moss added, the mood of that space looked a little different, and I also felt proud that I had made it myself.
Whenever my eyes landed on it, I felt as though I could pause and catch my breath for a moment. The pink-bellied turtle I keep at home even came close to the terrarium.
What was nice about keeping it as a decorative piece?
To me, it felt like a decorative piece that needed less hands-on care than an aquarium or enclosure. Just having made it and looking at it made me feel as though nature was close by, and it suited a small space well. I also had the impression that it might have a humidifying effect, but I did not verify that separately.
Personally, I thought it was good value for money, too. I was happy to spend time making it with my child and then keep it as a decoration. After making one, I started wanting to make a larger terrarium for the wall as well.
