Ikseon-dong bakery bread packed for a trip to Ulsan: Munhwa Bakery

In short

Munhwa Bakery is a bakery in Ikseon-dong, Jongno, Seoul, a 5-minute walk from Jongno 3-ga Station, known for baking its bread fresh each day and selling out the same day. On a last stop before heading down to Ulsan, the writer took home injeolmi bread (bread with roasted soybean-dusted rice cake), an onion bagel and sweet potato bread in a Munhwa Bakery paper bag, and none of the loaves got squashed on the trip. Munhwa Bakery's loaves are big enough that one fills you up, and the signature garlic bread and coffee bread are worth aiming for next time.

Today I stopped by Ikseon-dong one last time before heading down to Ulsan, and visited Munhwa Bakery, famous as an Ikseon-dong food spot. Munhwa Bakery is known for putting so much care into every single loaf, with generous sizes and the real taste of the ingredients coming through — apparently it's one of Seoul's top three bakeries haha. So I couldn't not stop by, and ended up taking some home!

Where is Munhwa Bakery, and how far from Jongno 3-ga Station?

Munhwa Bakery, the Ikseon-dong food spot, is about a 5-minute walk from Jongno 3-ga Station, so it was easy to find and get to. We swung by quickly on our way back from a café.

Munhwa Bakery only sells bread baked that day, and whatever's not sold by the end of the day gets donated to those in need — so it's not just selling bread, it's doing good too, which made me like it even more 👍 The inside of the store isn't very big, so only 2 groups can enter at a time.

Visiting on a weekday afternoon — how much bread was left?

I visited on a weekday afternoon, and luckily there was still a good variety of bread left! Since it's such a popular bakery, if you go later in the day things might be sold out, so if there's something specific you want, it's better to go a bit early.

What's on the shelves — Munhwa Bakery's bread lineup

Walking in, the first thing that caught my eye was the variety of bread on display 🥹 From injeolmi bread to peanut bread, mugwort rice cake bread, cheese bread, squid ink and condensed milk bread, black sesame bread, and milk cream bread — every single one was big in size and unique in look. I'm a real bread lover, so honestly everything looked so good I wanted to buy one of each, but since I already had a lot of luggage, I just picked a few things I really wanted.

The three I brought for the trip to Ulsan, and the paper bag packaging

Out of everything, I picked three to eat before heading down to Ulsan: injeolmi bread, onion bagel, and sweet potato bread! Each loaf was individually wrapped and carefully packed into a paper bag haha. Since it was a sturdy square paper bag instead of a plastic one, the bread stayed intact the whole way to Ulsan, which I really appreciated.

I couldn't hold back my curiosity before leaving for Ulsan, so I took out what I'd bought — injeolmi bread, onion bagel, and sweet potato bread. Each loaf was pretty sizable, so even picking just one felt like it would be a solid, filling meal! And since it's baked that day and sold that day, the bread felt fresh(?).

Sweet potato bread

The first thing I tried was the sweet potato bread. If you love sweet potato, this one is a must-try! Inside, you get that distinctive sweet and soft sweet potato flavor, and the bread itself was so soft it made a great snack.

Onion bagel

The onion bagel isn't your typical chewy bagel — it's more like a crispy baguette-style bread with onion cream cheese spread inside. Personally, I love this style of bread, and the onion aroma was fragrant, with a nice crispy-outside-chewy-inside texture!!

Injeolmi bread

The injeolmi bread had that mild, nutty injeolmi (sweet rice cake coated in roasted bean powder) flavor coming through gently, with red bean and cream cheese inside for extra nuttiness! This one goes perfectly with milk! If you usually like injeolmi or desserts with roasted bean powder, this will really suit your taste.

Overall thoughts after trying all three

Trying all three, each one had a slightly different taste and texture, which made picking and choosing fun haha. Above all, Munhwa Bakery's bread is generally large in size and feels generously made with ingredients, so even one is quite filling 👍 This time I picked injeolmi bread, onion bagel, and sweet potato bread, but next time I definitely want to try their signature garlic bread and coffee bread haha. This was the last bakery I stopped by in Seoul before heading down to Ulsan, and the variety and taste and price were better than expected, so it's a bakery that comes to mind again.
