I took my daughters out for dinner at Onjeongban Shabu Kalguksu Namyangju Byeollae Main Branch (온정반샤브칼국수 남양주별내본점) in Byeollae, Namyangju. Warm shabu-shabu, handmade rolled dumplings made in the shop, free gondeure rice, and dessert after the meal! The parking and the restaurant itself were good too, so it stuck with me as a nice place for a family meal.

The signature handmade rolled dumpling hot pot for 3

What we ordered with my daughters that day was Onjeongban's signature dish, the handmade rolled dumpling hot pot (수제굴림만두전골) for 3.

The hot pot came with shabu-shabu meat, plenty of vegetables, and both meat rolled dumplings and kimchi rolled dumplings.

How are rolled dumplings different from regular dumplings?
Instead of a thick dumpling wrapper, the filling is shaped into little round balls. The name may sound unfamiliar, but when the food arrived, the round dumplings looked fun and appetizing.
Once the broth starts boiling, you cook the meat and vegetables in it. The broth was refreshing yet deep, and cooking things one by one in it, I really enjoyed the charm of a warm soup meal.
Free gondeure rice: my daughters mixed it twice

The gondeure rice (thistle-herb rice) at Onjeongban is free at the self-serve bar. You add seasoned soy sauce and perilla oil and mix it to your taste. This was the surprise hit of the meal.
The nutty perilla oil plus the savory sauce made it much tastier than I expected. My daughters love gondeure bibimbap, so they made it twice! 😊 It went even better with the geotjeori (fresh kimchi) and cabbage salad that came along. With free gondeure rice on top, the meal felt even fuller.
Kimchi vs. meat rolled dumplings: which is better?

The hot pot comes with half kimchi and half meat rolled dumplings, so you can compare the two flavors. I finally got to taste the handmade rolled dumplings I was most curious about.
The kimchi dumplings had a nice mix of crunchy kimchi and soft tofu, and the seasoning wasn't too strong, so they were easy to eat. The meat dumplings were mild and tender, with a pleasant bit of vegetable texture here and there. They went even better with the shabu-shabu broth.
Finishing with kalguksu and porridge

After the shabu-shabu and dumplings, you can finish with kalguksu (knife-cut noodles) and porridge. You add noodles to the broth enriched by vegetables and meat, and ending with porridge makes the meal truly filling.

From gondeure rice to shabu-shabu, rolled dumplings and kalguksu! Being able to enjoy so many different dishes made it a satisfying family meal.
Dessert after the meal: slush and snack corner

There is a dessert corner for when you leave after eating, with blue ade and mango slush plus various snacks. It was another thing I liked about Onjeongban.
After warm shabu-shabu, rinsing the mouth with a cold slush made the ending fun too. It's not just eating and leaving; a simple dessert is a small but welcome service. I think it's a nice touch for visiting with kids or for anyone craving something sweet after a meal.
