Adjustable mala shabu-shabu for two in Dongdaemun: Shabu Torang
In short
Shabu Torang Jang-an Direct Branch is a one-pot-per-person shabu-shabu restaurant on Janghan-ro in Dongdaemun-gu, Seoul. Two diners ordered one clear broth and one mala broth, added beef brisket and chuck with vegetables, and finished with egg porridge and mala cream risotto for ₩30,000 in total. Because Shabu Torang serves mala as a separate sauce rather than a mala stock, you set the strength yourself, and the peanut sauce stands out: a great-value shabu-shabu spot that also suits solo diners.

It's hot out, so why shabu-shabu? Because the restaurant is bright and cool inside, so a steaming broth plus a really good meal felt like paradise,, 😍

Shabu-shabu (hot pot where you swish thin meat and veggies in broth) usually needs two or more people, so eating it solo is often a letdown. But Shabu Torang Jang-an Direct Branch, the Dongdaemun spot I visited today, is just perfect for solo diners.
They have unique broths and even sukiyaki, so I don't think I'd get bored even coming alone many times.
Shabu Torang Jang-an menu and prices
The base shabu-shabu is only ₩7,900, so it's great value! The combo I'd recommend is the spicy shabu plus the cream pasta.

Whenever Ryu Soo-young shows up on Fun-Staurant, I think, wow, he really knows his cooking, and it turns out he's the model here haha. So somehow it feels like it'll taste even better... like I'll have eaten well?!
Where is Shabu Torang Jang-an and what is the inside like?
Shabu Torang Jang-an is at 146 Janghan-ro, 1st floor, Dongdaemun-gu, Seoul. It's about a 15-minute walk from Janghanpyeong Station, so it's a bit of a distance.
I was so, so full that I walked back, but in the heat the walk was a bit much, haha.. Lots of buses run nearby, so I think taking a bus is best. There was no wait and we got straight in, which was lucky, and right when we walked in the place filled up!!
The seating is split into side-by-side tables for solo diners and sofa seats where two people sit next to each other. Even couples sit side by side and eat cozily, which felt a little like a Japanese restaurant, haha. The place is small but clean, and even full, it didn't feel cramped. The staff were friendly too!

What is on the menu at Shabu Torang Jang-an?
I think the biggest plus is being able to eat shabu-shabu, a dish that's hard to enjoy comfortably alone, without any fuss. Prices differ by broth, but the average is ₩7,000–8,000! If the vegetables that come as standard feel a bit light, you can add more as an option.

We added meat and veggies and we were really full. And we didn't add that much: just beef brisket + veggies and beef chuck + veggies on top of the standard set. We also had dessert, egg porridge and mala cream risotto to go with the mala, and the total was still ₩30,000. Insanely good value!!
What should you order at Shabu Torang Jang-an?
We ordered one clear broth and one mala broth. I was trying to eat less spicy stuff so I took the clear broth and my partner got the mala, but we ended up swapping ㅠㅠ One bite of the mala and it was so good I couldn't resist..

By the way, it's not a mala broth; they give you the mala sauce separately, so you can adjust how strong it is to your taste! When I added more broth midway, they'd give a bit more mala sauce too if I wanted it!! Wow...

Look at the standard set~ It's pretty generous!! A deep bowl comes with a variety of vegetables, beef chuck and beef brisket, and since we chose the add-on option, we got extra meat and veggies. I think the add-on was around ₩5,000? Something like that, and for that I'd say it's a really great-value spot.

Bubbling away~~~~ It's induction so it isn't hot, and the burner sits at the very top of the seat, so even with lots of dishes it never felt crowded or messy.

Peanut sauce and the beef
Oh, and the peanut sauce here is insanely good... I finished a whole tub by myself.. Having lots of dipping sauces, including chili and a special soy sauce, is another plus haha.

I love dipping shabu in all sorts of sauces. The meat was thin and tender too: the chuck is mild and the brisket is chewy!!

Finishing with egg porridge and mala cream risotto
We ordered egg porridge for the clear broth and mala cream risotto for the mala~ Personally these finishers are the absolute best!!!! Rich with nutty oil, stir-fried with egg first and then shared, with plenty of seaweed flakes~ Loaded with egg, so it's savory, mild and soft~

With mala, you absolutely.. absolutely!! have to try cream risotto or cream pasta!!! This one is the nutty egg porridge haha.

It's thick, spicy and full of mala flavor in a creamy style that the MZ generation would love, so we scraped the pot clean hahaha. Insanely good..

Maybe because it's a directly run branch, Shabu Torang Jang-an was clearly well kept and the service was great!
