Even on a diet, eating out is unavoidable. So let me recommend a dumpling hot pot that nails carbs, protein and fat and is great value too. This is Jongga Mandu (종가만두), a dumpling hot pot spot near Jongno 3-ga Station where we ate well, happily and cheaply. It's also a good lunch pick if you're around Jongno or Cheonggyecheon.

Jongga Mandu atmosphere and how to order
For a dumpling specialist, Jongga Mandu is a pretty big place. You order through a table device, and drinks are self-serve. The room feels big the moment you walk in, and then there's even more seating further inside.

The interior isn't anything special, but it feels completely focused on the food! We went at lunchtime, and this huge room was packed. A real Jongno favorite.
Jongga Mandu menu and dumpling hot pot price
The dumpling hot pot is ₩14,000 per person, with a minimum of 2 people. You can choose clear broth, spicy broth, or half-and-half, and the menu is full of dumpling dishes: bibim kalguksu (spicy mixed noodles), mandu-guk (dumpling soup), boiled dumplings, fried dumplings, and fried shrimp as a side.

I was curious about the fried dumplings too, but for two women even two servings of the hot pot was overload, so sadly we skipped them.

We ordered the half-and-half broth hot pot for two, good value and a good carb-protein-fat balance. Even when it's hot out, I can't give up a steaming bowl of soup. Team soup, right here!
What comes with the dumpling hot pot for two?
The hot pot for two comes with 4 meat dumplings and 4 kimchi dumplings, so 8 in total, plus beef, vegetables, kalguksu noodles and crunchy geotjeori. The basic set was enough for us, but if you need more there are extra meat and vegetable options.

How to cook the dumpling hot pot
At Jongga Mandu the staff tell you to put the dumplings in first once the broth boils, since they need time to cook.

Then add the vegetables (bean sprouts, bok choy, mushrooms, napa cabbage and more) evenly into both the spicy and clear broths, toss in the beef too, and let it all boil up for a bit, and

Why dumpling hot pot works as a diet-friendly meal out
Delicious dumpling hot pot, done! The dumplings already contain meat and protein, but Jongga Mandu's hot pot adds beef as well, so you get a protein-packed meal, which makes it a good choice when eating out on a diet.
The clear broth is really clean and light, and the spicy broth has a little kick of heat at the end.

After diligently hoovering up the meat, vegetables and dumplings, add kalguksu at the end for the carbs and the hearty meal is complete! (Pro tip: save a little meat to eat with the noodles?!)
Are Jongga Mandu's dumplings really handmade?
At the entrance you can see a staff member constantly folding dumplings. It's a Jongno dumpling spot that's basically saying, "Yes, these are really, truly handmade!"

Packed fillings are a given, and the wrappers are thin and soft, so they go down so nicely. The meat dumplings are mild and clean-tasting, and the kimchi ones are crunchy and spicy. The dumplings are genuinely good.
Jongga Mandu half-and-half dumpling hot pot: final verdict

Order the hot pot half-and-half at Jongga Mandu and you get two broths (clear and spicy) and two dumplings (meat and kimchi), so four flavor combinations in all. At ₩14,000 per person, it's a lunch spot where you can eat heartily with carbs, protein and fat covered.
It left me wanting to try other dishes too, like the fried dumplings and bibim kalguksu. A Jongno dumpling shop I'd happily return to.
