What is Choburi Kimchi Jjigae Gojan Main Branch like?
Choburi Kimchi Jjigae (초부리김치찌개) Gojan Main Branch is a kimchi jjigae (kimchi stew) and pot rice restaurant on Gwangdeok 3-ro in Danwon-gu, Ansan. It is open 11:00–21:00, with a break from 15:30 to 17:00. When I want a hearty yet comforting, home-style meal in Ansan, kimchi jjigae and pot rice are the first things that come to mind.
These days I look for places that offer more than just good taste: quality ingredients, a tidy lineup of dishes and a comfortable dining space too. So this time I visited Choburi Kimchi Jjigae, which many people recommend as a pot rice spot in Ansan.
Parking and how to get to Choburi Kimchi Jjigae

The restaurant sits in a central commercial area of Ansan, so it is easy to reach. If you come by car, you can use a nearby public parking lot, which made the visit convenient. It was also easy to get to by public transport. The exterior looks clean and warm, so even first-timers should have no trouble finding it.
Inside Choburi Kimchi Jjigae and the self-serve side dishes

The hall of the Gojan Main Branch is a wide space with wood-tone interiors and generously spaced tables. The warm wood tones were the first thing I noticed when I walked in, and with little interference from neighboring tables, it was a good place for conversation. The atmosphere suits family meals, get-togethers with friends and office lunches alike.
The basic side dishes include stir-fried fish cake, pickled chili peppers and dried seaweed, a lineup that goes well with kimchi jjigae. Nothing was overly strong; the flavors were neat and home-style, which let the main dishes shine.
If you run short of side dishes, you can help yourself to more. What impressed me most was that, besides the gardenia pot rice, you can eat as much of the rice prepared in the cauldron as you like.
What did we order at Choburi Kimchi Jjigae?

This time we ordered the pot rice and stew set for two.
How does the Choburi kimchi jjigae broth taste?

Choburi uses Korean-grown kimchi and Korean-grown chili powder, which brings out the true flavor of the kimchi. With the first spoonful of broth, the tangy taste and deep savoriness of kimchi spread naturally. It wasn't just a spicy kimchi jjigae; it had the depth of something simmered for a long time.
Pork and silver ear mushroom topping

The stew was spicy but not harsh, so I kept spooning up the broth without feeling weighed down. There was plenty of pork with a nice chew, and it was clean and mild without any gamey smell, blending well with the broth.
The silver ear mushroom topping made the texture satisfying too. Silver ear mushroom, also called white wood ear, keeps a crunchy bite, adding a fun contrast between the tender pork and the kimchi.
Gardenia pot rice, perilla oil fried egg and kimchi pancake rolls

The gardenia pot rice served with the kimchi jjigae was very satisfying too. When I lifted the lid, warm steam rose and a nutty rice aroma spread, and the glossy grains looked delicious. Cooked with gardenia, the rice had a lovely subtle color, and it was sticky yet fluffy, perfect with the kimchi jjigae.
After scooping out the rice, you pour in warm water to enjoy sungnyung (scorched rice tea), so the end of the meal was hearty too.
The perilla oil fried egg had a runny yolk that was great mixed into the rice, and the subtle nuttiness of the perilla oil made the flavor much deeper. Salty yet soft, it struck me as the best combination with the kimchi jjigae.
The kimchi pancake rolls were golden and crispy on the outside, filled generously with well-fermented kimchi inside.
Overall verdict on Choburi Kimchi Jjigae, an Ansan pot rice spot

Choburi Kimchi Jjigae, an Ansan pot rice spot, isn't just a place with good kimchi jjigae. It has carefully made food with Korean-grown ingredients, a generous self-serve bar, freshly cooked gardenia pot rice and a comfortable dining space.
I think it works for many situations: family meals, office lunches, meals with friends, even eating alone. If you're looking for a pot rice restaurant in Ansan, I recommend Choburi Kimchi Jjigae, where you can enjoy deep, rich kimchi jjigae together with warm pot rice. It gave me a hearty meal and the satisfaction of tidy home cooking, and it was impressive enough that I want to come back.
