Graffiti-walled Sokcho bakery café: black sesame potato bread, Bultan

Sokcho Bultan Gamja Bread Main Store (속초불탄감자빵) is a potato bread bakery café on Haksapyeong-gil in Sokcho, Gangwon. A family of potato bread fans stopped by on a Gangwon trip, took in the graffiti exterior and wood-toned interior, and tried the 4-piece Sokcho Bultan potato bread, made with squid ink and coated in black sesame, black bean and black rice powder, along with the Sokcho jjondeugi (chewy grilled snack) set. Thanks to the chewy potato filling and the seafood-rich squid jjondeugi, the whole family wished they had bought one more box.

Suwon pizzeria after Hwaseong Fortress media art: The European

The European Haenggung Main Branch is a wood-fired pizza and Western restaurant on Haengridan-gil in Haenggung-dong, Suwon, reportedly run by a chef who worked at The Shilla Hotel for 10 years. After the Suwon Hwaseong Fortress media art show, the writer ordered The European's signature jambon truffle funghi pizza (31,000 won) and bolognese lasagna (23,000 won), and the red-brick exterior and calm, chandelier-lit interior stood out. The European Haenggung Main Branch is a good Haengridan-gil pick for a date, a blind date, or dinner before a walk around Hwaseong Haenggung Palace.

Early-evening Dangsan izakaya with open-kitchen bar seats: Kaken

Kaken is a wood-toned Japanese-style izakaya one minute from Exit 2 of Dangsan Station in Yeongdeungpo, Seoul. Arriving at 5:30pm on a weekday, I took a seat at the open bar counter facing the kitchen and ordered abalone guts pasta (23,000 won) and whole steamed squid (16,000 won) with Cass draft beer. Kaken works well as a second-round spot in Dangsan if you want an outdoor-drinking mood without the noise.
