Amsa Market chicken shop with a pre-Chuseok queue: Gimssi Chicken

Gimssi Chicken Amsa Market Branch is a dakgangjeong (sweet-and-spicy fried chicken) shop inside Amsa Jongham Market in Gangdong, Seoul, a short walk from Amsa Station on Line 8. On a Saturday evening before Chuseok, the writer waited in line and took out a medium fried boneless chicken for 8,000 won and a large medium-spicy dakgangjeong for 13,000 won, both fried to order and tossed on the griddle right in front of customers. Gimssi Chicken works equally well as a market snack and as late-night takeout.

Amsa-dong tonkatsu at 6pm: limited menus sold out, ₩15,000 Tonka set

Tonka is a tonkatsu (Japanese-style pork cutlet) restaurant on the first floor of a side street off Sangam-ro 5-gil in Amsa-dong, Gangdong, Seoul. Arriving around 6pm, both limited-quantity items were already sold out, so we ordered the signature tonkatsu (loin + tenderloin) at ₩15,000 and compared the crisp-outside, juicy-inside loin with the pink-centred, tender fillet on one plate. If the limited menu is what you want, come to Tonka early.
