Amsa-dong tonkatsu at 6pm: limited menus sold out, ₩15,000 Tonka set
In short
Tonka is a tonkatsu (Japanese-style pork cutlet) restaurant on the first floor of a side street off Sangam-ro 5-gil in Amsa-dong, Gangdong, Seoul. Arriving around 6pm, both limited-quantity items were already sold out, so we ordered the signature tonkatsu (loin + tenderloin) at ₩15,000 and compared the crisp-outside, juicy-inside loin with the pink-centred, tender fillet on one plate. If the limited menu is what you want, come to Tonka early.

Tonka, an Amsa-dong restaurant that serves tonkatsu and nothing else
Today I'm sharing a tonkatsu spot I visited in Amsa-dong. Spoiler: this was the best tonkatsu I've had so far. Seriously!! It shows up on Naver Maps as a popular Gangdong-gu tonkatsu restaurant with a 4.9 rating, so I went in with high expectations — and it exceeded them.

How to find Tonka from Amsa Station
It's on the ground floor of an alley off Sangam-ro 5-gil, right next to Burger Farm. There's a small bench and a stone object out front that make it easy to spot. It's near Amsa Station, so it's also convenient for anyone hunting for good Gangdong-gu restaurants.

Counter seats and how to order at Tonka
Here's the vibe. Inside, it's a counter seating layout wrapped around the kitchen. The rough-textured ceiling, track lighting, and wood-tone counter all come together for a real Japanese tonkatsu shop feel. The とんかつ noren hanging on the wall is cute too.

There were sauce bottles, a pitcher, and paper cups already set up on the counter, so water seemed to be self-serve. You order by scanning the QR code attached to your seat.

Tonka menu and prices: why the limited items sell out by 6pm
The main menu had these items.
- Tonkatsu (loin + tenderloin): ₩15,000 (signature menu)
- Special loin katsu (limited quantity): ₩18,000
- Sasami katsu (limited quantity, chicken breast cutlet): ₩14,000
I got there around 6pm and the two limited items were already sold out. If you want to try the limited menu, I'd recommend going a bit earlier.

What comes with the ₩15,000 loin and tenderloin set
So I ordered the signature tonkatsu (loin + tenderloin) instead. Here's how it arrived.

Rice, miso soup, cabbage, mustard, and perilla leaves all came neatly arranged on one tray. At ₩15,000, getting both loin and tenderloin in one meal felt like a really solid deal.
The loin cutlet: crisp outside, juicy inside
The loin comes sliced thick, and even the cut surface looks glossy. The breading has visible texture so it crunches with every bite, while the inside stays juicy. It didn't feel greasy — more like the pork flavor came through clean.

Tonka's sauce and mustard with the pork cutlet
Dip it lightly in the tonkatsu sauce and the sweet, rich flavor pairs perfectly with the breading.

Add a little mustard on top and it cuts right through the richness — tastes great in a totally different way.

How the tenderloin tastes different from the loin
The tenderloin comes as two round pieces, and the cut surface is pink.

There's a sign posted in the restaurant explaining that pork contains myoglobin, so the inside can still look pink even after cooking. I actually loved this — it was so soft and moist.
Cabbage salad and miso soup on the side
The cabbage is finely shredded, and eating it with the dressing between bites of katsu works perfectly as a palate cleanser. The miso soup has shiitake mushrooms in it and the broth is rich and savory. Sipping it between bites of katsu resets your palate.
Finishing the whole plate at Tonka
In the end, I cleared everything with nothing left. Rice bowl, soup bowl, plate — all spotless, see? haha

Drinks and service at Tonka
In the fridge next to the counter there was Coca-Cola, Coke Zero, Sprite, and Asahi Super Dry bottled beer. I had a Coke Zero, but a cold beer would probably pair really well with tonkatsu too.

The owner was also so friendly that I felt good the whole meal. Between the taste and this kind of service, it's what makes me want to come back.
