Munhwa Bakery: a 3-minute walk from Jongno 3-ga Station

Munhwa Bakery is a bakery in the Ikseon-dong / Jongno 3-ga area famous as one of Seoul's three great bakeries. Normally there's a big opening-run crowd and a long wait, but today I got lucky and packed my order without waiting at all!!

It's the closest bakery to Jongno 3-ga Station, about a 3-minute walk. Perfect for a quick stop if you have plans in Ikseon-dong or Jongno 3-ga haha. It's not even in the Ikseon-dong alleys — just follow the main street and it's right there, so it's super easy to find!!

What Munhwa Bakery looks like inside and out

Thanks to the sign that just says "Bread," anyone can tell from far away that there's a bakery here lolllll.

Munhwa Bakery has no seating, takeout only. There were also free samples. It just gives off this warm, welcoming feeling somehow. You pick the bread by eye, tell the staff, and they pack each one for you — then you just pay.

So much delicious bread ㅜㅜ from Munhwa Bakery's signature garlic bread to the pretty white bean paste bread and the unusual coffee bread — all of it looks amazing. Today I wanted to try something I hadn't had before, so I got the coffee bread and onion bread!! I love castella-style bread the most, and coffee bread is basically the coffee version of that — I was too curious not to grab one.

Isn't the price really reasonable for such a big size?! Bread in Korea can get so expensive, plenty of places charging ₩7,000–8,000 a piece, so this felt like really good value.

Got my bread neatly packed and snapped a proof shot. I'd always wanted to come to Munhwa Bakery someday and finally got to try it haha. It's so famous as an Ikseon-dong must-visit bakery that it's been on my bread-lover's bucket list forever. Standing there taking a photo with the paper bag, some foreign tourists nearby were watching me curiously lolll — yes, I am in fact Korean...

Munhwa Bakery cuts the bread for you when packing

When Munhwa Bakery packed my order, they also cut the bread. It was cut into easy-to-eat sizes, so convenient I could just pick pieces up right away.

Got home and just tossed it on a plate, but doesn't it have kind of an aesthetic vibe anyway haha.

Grabbed the two tasty ones and I'm getting excited now. Munhwa Bakery's bread is just genuinely delicious. It's really chewy, and the moisture level seems adjusted perfectly for each bread's own style?! One bite in and you get it — now I understand why it's so famous haha. Munhwa Bakery's bread really feels like something everyone, any age, would love?!

Coffee bread: castella with a coffee flavor

This coffee bread especially is seriously amazing. My eyes went wide after eating it. It's exactly the coffee version of castella bread that I imagined, and it's really chewy. There's coffee cream spread both in the center and on the outside, so it has a subtle coffee aroma too — I think it would go great with actual coffee.

The coffee cream's aroma isn't too strong and the sweetness is just right, so it pairs so well with the bread!! Honestly the kind of taste I want to eat a whole loaf of every day ㅜㅠ Sometimes I crave white roll bread, but now I feel like this coffee bread is going to join the regular craving rotation too. Just a person who now wants to eat even more things.

Onion bagel: big enough to be a whole meal

The onion bagel was also a good big size, plenty enough to swap in for a whole meal and delicious too. The center is spread with onion cream cheese, and it really has a texture like actual onion bits mixed in, with a sweet-and-salty flavor to the cream cheese itself. On top of that, the bagel itself has nuts baked in, so the combo with the cream cheese is amazing.

It seems like a great thing to bring on a picnic, and when you're super busy, grabbing one of these with a coffee would make a filling meal. The cream cheese inside is genuinely so good, and the bagel itself is chewy too — it's just fantastic ㅜ.

There really is a reason Koreans wait in line at this place. If you're looking for a must-visit bakery in Jongno 3-ga or Ikseon-dong, definitely visit Munhwa Bakery! I can already tell the other breads are going to be delicious too without even trying them. Next time I'll be back to demolish the breads I haven't tried yet.
