Today I'm bringing you the final stop of our epic 3-day, 2-night Chungcheong family trip — a review of 'Danyang Heukmaneul Nurungji Dakgangjeong' (단양흑마늘누룽지닭강정) in Danyang Gugyeong Market 🍗 We swung by on a whim right before heading home and ended up tasting the real deal, a true life-best fried chicken…! Let's get into the review 🌀

Outside the shop and the market atmosphere
Right before heading home on day three, I saw that Danyang is famous for garlic and got a sudden craving for garlic dakgangjeong, so we stopped by… and no exaggeration, I met a true life-best dakgangjeong 🥹 (I'm usually pretty indifferent to dakgangjeong, to be honest!)
Danyang Heukmaneul Nurungji Dakgangjeong is located inside Danyang Gugyeong Market. Parking isn't easy around the market and traffic got a bit tangled, so hearing that waiting was a must, I hopped out first 🏃♀️ The market itself is clean and easy to navigate, so I found the shop without trouble. True to being the land of black garlic, there were so many black garlic-related shops around!
Roasted nurungji (crispy scorched rice) goes on top of the dakgangjeong as a topping, and a staff member was roasting it right there in real time… this place is the real deal 👏

The menu at Danyang Heukmaneul Nurungji Dakgangjeong has only three items — Original, Black Garlic Double Flavor, and Black Garlic Makgeolli!! I asked, and apparently younger customers usually go for the original, so I ordered per the owner's recommendation. Here's what we ordered today ⬇️

How long was the wait after ordering?
After ordering, they told us, "Come pick it up in an hour." Wait, what?! But even with our drive back to Ulsan getting later, I thought, "Ah, this must really be a true hidden gem," so I decided to wait and took a walk around the area 🚶♀️
👉 Definitely take a photo of your order number receipt or keep it with you! They call your order number when you come back around the 1-hour mark. (It took exactly one hour!! Doesn't seem like there's any way to get it faster ㅠㅠhaha)
Detailed review: the black garlic original flavor
An hour later, we finally had the black garlic nurungji dakgangjeong and makgeolli in hand…! You could feel the heat radiating the moment we got it 🔥 There was nowhere good to eat nearby, so we hopped straight into the car!! Once inside, I just wanted to peek at what it looked like, and honestly, both the look and the heat were incredible haha. We ended up parking the car, sitting in the back seat, cracking open a small can of beer we had in the cooler, and diving right in 🍺 (the driver obviously didn't drink)
▪ Black garlic original ⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐ Anything fresh out of the fryer tastes good, but this was genuinely 'incredibly delicious' 🤤 It wasn't sweet and had no sticky texture, with a strong spicy kick that I loved. It's not the sweet, store-bought dakgangjeong flavor, so it might be a bit too spicy for young kids!
The garlic flakes made from real garlic, the nurungji, the bit of french fries and lotus root chips mixed in — every single thing was so good ㅠㅠ We ended up parking and polishing off about a quarter of it before finally getting back on the highway haha
Final verdict
I genuinely, wholeheartedly recommend this place‼️ Someone who had zero expectations for dakgangjeong ended up declaring it a true life-best dakgangjeong haha 🍗 Not sweet, with that spicy black garlic flavor plus roasted nurungji and garlic flake toppings — a combination I've never had anywhere else, so if you're traveling to Danyang, you absolutely have to stop by!!
The waiting and the 1-hour wait are totally worth it, a place worth the wait 😌 (by the time I picked mine up, the wait had stretched to 1 hour 20 minutes ;; go as early as you possibly can)
