On a weekend evening, you just want a nice meal with a drink and a relaxed date, right? We're a couple who love hunting down good restaurants, and this weekend we made dinner plans in Isu and spent a while wondering where to go before ending up at Hoepanjang.
I like raw fish and have tried plenty of places, but this time I'd heard you could get properly aged sashimi here, so I went in with high expectations.

Hoepanjang for aged sashimi in Isu?
Hoepanjang Isu Branch (회판장 이수점) is a raw fish restaurant in Isu (near Chongsin Univ. Station) that specializes in aged sashimi. There are honestly plenty of good restaurants in Isu, but it's not easy to find a raw fish place with its own appeal. Hoepanjang, true to its name, felt like a place that really cares about its fish, which made me even happier.
If you love sashimi, I think it's worth a visit at least once.

What's the atmosphere at Hoepanjang Isu Branch like?
Hoepanjang Isu Branch feels more stylish and comfortable than a traditional raw fish joint, so it's no pressure as a date spot. The first thing I noticed on walking in was how clean it was. It was a weekend evening and fairly busy, but lively rather than rowdy, so it was easy to talk.
How is Hoepanjang's aged sashimi different from live fish sashimi?
Hoepanjang's biggest strength is the aged sashimi, which has a charm quite different from ordinary live-fish sashimi.
Live fish sashimi stresses a bouncy, springy texture, while aged sashimi is known for deeper umami and flavor, right? I felt Hoepanjang really brings out those strengths.

An aged sashimi spread with several kinds of fish
The aged sashimi comes neatly plated with several kinds of fish. The moment it arrived I couldn't help exclaiming at how it looked, and having multiple fish on one plate made it fun to look at too.
I tried one piece first and there was no fishy smell at all. The umami kept building the more I chewed, which impressed me. I could feel again why so many people seek out aged sashimi.

Sashimi that's delicious without soy sauce or wasabi
Through the aging process, the sashimi felt chewier in texture and richer in flavor. For me, someone who likes enjoying the true taste of sashimi, it was a very satisfying setup.
So I could enjoy it fully without piling on soy sauce or wasabi. That's only possible when the fish itself is good quality, which made it even more satisfying.

If you eat out often, you learn how much the basics of a dish matter. Hoepanjang felt solid on those basics.
It goes beyond simply serving fresh fish; it felt like each fish was aged to suit its own character, which impressed me. That made it clearly different from the sashimi at an ordinary raw fish restaurant.

What are Hoepanjang's side dishes like?
The side dishes served alongside were clean and went well with the sashimi. The lineup of accompaniments was another thing I liked.
Sometimes an overdone lineup overpowers the taste of the fish, but Hoepanjang's sides are put together to show off the main sashimi, which I appreciated.

Is aged sashimi good with a drink?
Hoepanjang's aged sashimi was really good with a drink too. When you're eating raw fish, you naturally start thinking of something to drink, right?
We had a light drink, and it paired well with the deep flavor of the aged sashimi, which made us even happier. If you're looking for a weekend evening date spot, a raw fish place like this isn't a bad idea, is it? 😄

Why I want to go back to Hoepanjang
Above all, I liked Hoepanjang because you can feel its sincerity about aged sashimi. Lots of places these days advertise aged fish, but when you actually eat it, sometimes you can't tell much difference.
At Hoepanjang, the difference in flavor was clear from the first bite. So I'd recommend it to raw fish lovers, and to people who regularly enjoy sashimi.

For people like us who hunt down good restaurants, it's hard to give a good rating just because one dish is tasty. The atmosphere, service and food quality all have to satisfy before we want to come back, right? In that sense, Hoepanjang in Isu is a place we're quite willing to revisit.

Why I recommend Hoepanjang as a date spot in Isu
I recommend Hoepanjang Isu Branch as a date spot because of its clean interior and comfortable atmosphere. It's not too loud and not too quiet either, so it's good for couples to chat over a meal. I actually saw lots of couples there.

If you're looking for somewhere to go on a day in Isu when you're craving raw fish, or when you want proper sashimi, I'd recommend Hoepanjang. You get aged sashimi with a different charm from an ordinary raw fish restaurant, and the food quality was satisfying, so it was a happy meal.
If you're planning a weekend evening date, or you usually love sashimi and aged raw fish, it's worth a visit. It was such a satisfying meal that we'd go back next time we're in Isu. 😊
