Haeundae café with Mom: Colombia hand drip & Belok tea, Low & Sweet

In short

Low & Sweet Roastery is a roastery café at the entrance to Haeridan-gil near Haeundae Station in Busan, brewing coffee from beans it roasts in-house. On a weekday visit near closing time with her mom, the writer took the owner's recommendations: a Colombia Betania anaerobic washed hand drip, a caffeine-free Belok tea and a pecan cookie. With clean, bright drip coffee and comfortable seats, Low & Sweet Roastery is a Haeridan-gil café worth going back to.

Where is Low & Sweet Roastery on Haeridan-gil?

Low & Sweet Roastery (로우앤스윗 로스터리) is a roastery café on the left side as you enter Haeridan-gil through the old Haeundae station side. Ever since I came down to Busan it had been cloudy, but then one day the sun came out beautifully, so I took a trip to Haeridan-gil for some good coffee. I heard Low & Sweet Roastery has a nice atmosphere and tasty coffee, so I went on a date with my mom.

Low & Sweet Roastery is under 5 minutes' walk from Haeundae Station, so it's very easy to reach, even by Haeridan-gil standards. If you search on a map, Low & Sweet Bakery also shows up just above it, so be careful not to mix them up when you go.

What are the atmosphere and seating like at Low & Sweet Roastery?

Low & Sweet Roastery has a clean yet cozy interior, and the chairs have backs, so it's a good café to sit in for a long time. Even on a weekday there were quite a few people and it was hard to take photos, so I aimed for almost closing time. The tidy, comfortable interior has a calming effect, and since the chairs aren't those uncomfortable backless ones, I recommend it as a date café in Haeundae.

There are also outdoor tables in the inner space of Low & Sweet Roastery, so when the weather is cool, drinking your coffee outside would be nice. It feels slightly separate from the inside of the shop, so if you're not a fan of crowds, this spot seems fine too, as long as it isn't a hot day.

What's on the menu at Low & Sweet Roastery?

Low & Sweet Roastery roasts its own coffee beans and brews and sells coffee from them, so most of the drinks are coffee. The menu has espresso-machine coffees, hand drip coffee brewed by hand, two non-coffee drinks, and milk for children. It seems the milk for kids is free.

Choose your drip coffee beans by smell

The drip coffee beans at Low & Sweet Roastery are briefly described on the menu, but you can also smell beans in the jars next to it and choose that way. The owner recommended me something fruity and clean. My mom had already had a coffee before coming, so she ordered the caffeine-free Belok tea.

Cookies, baked goods and bread at Low & Sweet Roastery

There were five kinds of cookies at Low & Sweet Roastery: chocolate, white macadamia, salted something-or-other, and so on. We were about to go to dinner, but I guess a sparrow really can't pass a mill. The cookies looked so good I couldn't possibly ignore them. The one with pecans looked the moistest and tastiest.

Besides cookies, there are baked goods like financiers and madeleines, and breads like pain au chocolat and croissants, so you can also have a light meal here.

Can you watch the hand drip being brewed at Low & Sweet Roastery?

If you order drip coffee at Low & Sweet Roastery, you can watch the owner hand drip it right there, like this.

While waiting for the coffee and tea, I looked around at the goods and beans sold at Low & Sweet Roastery. I smelled them one by one, and as expected, the Geisha with its floral and fruity notes was the best.

How does the Colombia Betania anaerobic washed drip coffee taste?

The bean the owner recommended was the Colombia Betania anaerobic washed. The drip coffee at Low & Sweet, a roastery café in Haeundae, is generally on the fruity, acidic side, and the Colombia is said to be the cleanest of them. The bean notes they gave me say you can taste and smell herbs and cranberry, which honestly I couldn't really tell, but it was the strong acidity plus clean taste I wanted, so I was satisfied! You pour a little at a time into the glass of ice they give you and drink it that way.

What does the caffeine-free Belok tea taste like?

The Belok tea at Low & Sweet Roastery is a caffeine-free herbal tea blended from hibiscus, lemongrass, rose, lavender and cinnamon. The owner recommended this one too, and since it's an herbal tea rich in vitamins, it seemed just right for my mom. The fresh acidity of the hibiscus and lemongrass, the subtle floral notes and the cinnamon go together well. It's tasty hot, but with the hibiscus in it, I bet it would be great iced in summer too.

Drinks and a pecan cookie at Low & Sweet Roastery

The pecan cookie at Low & Sweet Roastery is topped with big pecans and has chocolate chips inside, so it's quite sweet. It's a good dessert for a quick sugar recharge. It looked like the least sweet of the cookies, yet it was still pretty sweet, so coffee is a must!

The pecan cookie is fairly thick, so after finishing it I wasn't hungry, and since we had dinner coming up, I figured this wouldn't do and walked all the way to the restaurant we'd booked to work it off, haha. Still, both the coffee and the cookie were delicious, so no regrets. Low & Sweet Roastery, my pick as a Haeundae date café, looks set to become one of the few places on Haeridan-gil I'd go back to.
