Jongno 3-ga bakery on a gold-buying trip: chewy coffee bread, Munhwa

Munhwa Bakery (문화제빵) is a small, takeout-focused bakery on Donhwamun-ro in Jongno 3-ga, Seoul, where only 2 parties go in at a time. On a trip to Jongno to buy gold, the writer joined the line outside Munhwa Bakery and bought walnut, coffee, garlic and black sesame breads; the garlic bread is packed with garlic, and the coffee bread is chewy with a strong coffee aroma. Verdict: the coffee bread alone is reason enough to go back to Munhwa Bakery.

Korean BBQ by a Deungchon public car park: kimchi & sprouts at Ggupdda

Ggupdda (꿉따) Deungchon is a cauldron-lid Korean BBQ restaurant near Exit 4 of Deungchon Station in Yangcheon, Seoul. At Ggupdda the writer ordered a 600g pork belly and pork jowl set for 36,000 won and grilled it with kimchi, bean sprouts and minari (Korean water parsley). The meal finished with bibim makguksu (spicy mixed buckwheat noodles) and fried rice, helped along by a self-serve banchan bar, free doenjang jjigae and the public car park right next door. Ggupdda is a solid pick for a generous, reasonably priced pork belly dinner near Deungchon Station.

Hwagok-dong Korean BBQ with a traditional tablecloth: Gwangseonjip

Gwangseonjip Kkachisan Station Main Branch is a Korean BBQ restaurant on Gomdallae-ro in Hwagok-dong, Gangseo, Seoul, where staff grill the meat for you. The writer visited Gwangseonjip with her husband and found a table laid with a traditional Korean cloth (sangbo), welcome tea with 3 kinds of supplements, pickled onions and 4 sauces served on a plate shaped like a gat (traditional Korean hat), and a complimentary pajimchi (green onion kimchi) earthen pot. Great meat, a neat table spread and friendly staff make Gwangseonjip a Kkachisan Station BBQ spot where you feel like an honored guest.

Yeouido tteokbokki bar: popping sundae on a park picnic, Hyeonseonine

Hyeonseonine Premium IFC Mall Branch is a Korean snack bar (bunsik) on the B2 underground passage linking Yeouido Station and IFC Mall in Yeongdeungpo, Seoul. Around lunchtime on a weekday, the writer took out the Hyeonseonine Set (₩23,000) at medium spice and ate it in Yeouido Park: the tteokbokki (spicy rice cakes), sundae (Korean blood sausage), fritters and mini gimbap came in generous portions, and the sundae that bursts as you bite stood out most. In pricey Yeouido, Hyeonseonine Premium IFC Mall Branch is a good-value pick for a park picnic meal.

Dog-friendly drip café near Mecenatpolis, Hapjeong: Central Site

Central Site Hapjeong is a dog-friendly hand drip roastery café near Exit 2 of Hapjeong Station in Mapo, Seoul. On a trip to Mecenatpolis, the writer brought their dog Hodu inside Central Site Hapjeong in a dog stroller, smelled the beans before choosing, and ordered two bright, acidic washed drips and a tiramisu. The coffee tasted clean like a fragrant tea, and the tiramisu wasn't overly sweet. Prices run a little higher than an average café, but Central Site Hapjeong suits anyone who wants to compare beans firsthand near Hapjeong Station.
