Busy Yangjae café, Seoul: last butter babka, cappuccino at Mini Male

I've always liked Mini Male Coffee Roasters. I knew they had a few branches, and I've often visited the Gwacheon branch near my place — I've even posted about it a few times.

Today I finally made it to the Yangjae main branch. The Gwacheon branch is so popular that by afternoon the desserts are usually all gone and I've only managed to grab a cookie. So today I went to see the main branch I'd only heard about, and I got to witness the intensity firsthand. Let me walk you through the scene from the moment I stepped in.

Mini Male Coffee Roasters Yangjae Main Branch itself is a cute, compact space, but the scale of activity was on a completely different level. Seats were so hard to come by that I had to stand and wait.

In that tight space, four partners were working nonstop without a moment to breathe, and finding a seat was so hard I ended up standing and waiting.

What surprised me was that delivery riders on motorbikes showed up outside the shop like clockwork, exactly every two minutes, picking up orders of coffee and desserts nonstop.

Wow, the main branch really is on another level!

I actually said that out loud, jaw dropped at the sheer dynamic energy of the place.

They seemed to have muted the delivery notification sound so it wouldn't bother customers, but watching the kitchen move at that pace, I could really feel how popular this place is.

Sold out everywhere: how the last babka at Mini Male was claimed

At the Mini Male Yangjae main branch, the original babka was sold out, so I ordered the last remaining butter babka along with a Victoria scone. Sold-out desserts had always been my biggest disappointment whenever I visited the Gwacheon branch.

Every time I went, I never saw anything besides cookies, and when I asked a staff member, they said it's basically luck of the draw. But the main branch was different. Sure, some menu items were sold out from the flood of orders, but I finally got to try desserts I'd never been able to have before — it felt like a small wish come true.

The original babka, a new menu item from a few months ago loaded with rich Nutella chocolate and crunchy almonds and famously the number-one seller in Europe, was completely sold out, so I didn't even get to see it. But right next to it was the new butter babka, with exactly one piece left, so I quickly ordered it. Adding the sweet-tart charm of the Victoria scone, I had my perfect dessert lineup.

Babka is a traditional bread originating in Eastern Europe, particularly Poland and Ukraine, and its name comes from a word meaning 'grandmother.' It's said to be named for its traditional shape, which resembles a grandmother's pleated skirt.

Like brioche, it's loaded with butter and eggs, giving it a soft, moist dough that defines the pastry.

It's sometimes baked as a solid loaf like sandwich bread, or the dough is twisted like braided hair, layered with chocolate, nuts, butter, cinnamon and more, so the outside is crisp while the inside stays soft and richly flavored.

There was no original left, so I went with the butter babka, and the rich butter with the soft brioche dough was fantastic. I sliced a bit with a knife to show you, but eventually I just tore into it with my hands. Somehow it feels like it tastes better that way, and the toasty butter aroma drifted gently through the layered, living texture — not too sweet, nicely plain, and honestly it could pass as breakfast.

Victoria scone at Mini Male: what it tastes like

The Victoria scone at Mini Male Yangjae Main Branch is a scone filled generously with cream and raspberry jam in the center. You often see the name 'Victoria' attached to cakes and scones, and that goes back to 18th-century England, when the queen popularized afternoon tea culture — enjoying tea and light cakes around 4 or 5pm. The most beloved cake of that time was two layers of sponge cake filled generously with raspberry jam and buttercream.

So you can guess what's inside the Victoria scone, right? Crisp outside, moist inside — the textbook definition. The combination of cream and raspberry jam packed into the center speaks for itself, and with the buttery aroma spreading through it too, it pairs beautifully with coffee.

Helsinki latte and cappuccino, the signature drinks

Whenever I come to Mini Male, I always have to have a Helsinki latte. It's Mini Male's most famous drink.

They say it's their signature drink, recreating the perfect moment of the best latte they had by chance during a trip to Helsinki, Finland, using Mini Male's own original recipe. Hearing that origin story makes me want to go to Finland myself. It's hard to describe the taste exactly, but there's a rich milky flavor with no bitterness — just delicious.

It goes down smooth, and every branch sells the base in bottles larger than even a large size, so you can keep it refrigerated and enjoy it anywhere easily — a lot of people buy several bottles at once.

The cappuccino came with a generous dusting of cinnamon powder, and at first glance I thought, uh oh, does this look off? But it was delicious once I tasted it. Both drinks use milk, and I'm not sure if it's the milk, the beans, or the partner's skill, but it's hard to find coffee better than this.

Mini Male Coffee Roasters Yangjae Main Branch was a true hotspot in every sense. It runs on nonstop orders without a break, but I actually found it fun to feel that vibrant energy up close. Some desserts were sold out, but I was satisfied with what I got, and the always-delicious Helsinki latte plus the warm cappuccino made for a great combination overall.
