Yangjae café, Seoul: garlic salt bread and levain cookies at Mini Male

These days it feels like Americano fans have taken over, but plenty of us are still Team Latte, right?!!

Loving lattes as I do, I heard there was a café in Yangjae that roasts its own beans in-house, so I ran straight over haha. This is Mini Male Coffee Roasters Yangjae Main Branch, a café near Yangjae Citizen's Forest!

Since they source and roast their own specialty beans, I had high expectations for the coffee. Pairing the signature Helsinki Latte with crisp-outside, moist-inside garlic salt bread and a dense original levain cookie made for the perfect dessert combo!!

Mini Male Coffee Roasters Yangjae Main Branch is located about a 3-minute walk from Exit 3 of Yangjae Citizen's Forest Station.

Being close to the station makes it very accessible, and it's perfect for a coffee before or after a walk in Yangjae Citizen's Forest. With a wide range of bakery items like cookies and salt bread on top of the coffee, it's also great for anyone looking for good desserts near Yangjae Citizen's Forest.

The interior is done up in minimal Scandinavian style, so it's a really nice, moody place to spend some time haha.

A Yangjae roastery café that sources and roasts its own beans

Mini Male directly sources good green beans and researches and profiles the roasting itself at its own roastery in Seocho-dong.

They use specialty-grade green beans scoring 80+ on the cupping scale, so they're pretty serious about coffee!! You can also choose your bean depending on your taste.

There's Balance, with harmonious acidity and clean sweetness, Dunkel, with a heavy body and dark chocolate notes, and Decaf, for enjoying coffee without the caffeine load.

They also sell drip bags and coffee extract separately, so if you're a coffee lover it's fun just browsing lol. If you care about the flavor and aroma of your beans, this place is worth a visit as one of the good coffee shops in Yangjae!

I came just for a latte, but once I saw how good the bakery items looked, there was no way I could walk past lol.

And after trying the original levain cookie and finding it so delicious, I ended up packing these two extra flavors to eat at home!!

What does the signature Helsinki Latte taste like?

If you visit Mini Male, you absolutely have to try the 'Helsinki Latte'!! It's their signature menu item, reinterpreted with Mini Male's own recipe, inspired by a latte they tried while traveling in Helsinki, Finland.

It's characterized by a rich, smooth milk flavor, and it's about 1.5 out of 5 on sweetness, so it's not overly sweet. At first the milk and coffee form pretty layers, but once you mix it and take a sip… wow!! The latte was genuinely delicious lol.

The rich, nutty milk flavor spread smoothly first, followed naturally by the deep, intense flavor of the espresso. It wasn't just a sweet, nutty latte — the rich flavor of the milk and the aroma of specialty coffee balanced each other out for an even more luxurious taste!!

Even though the milk was rich, the espresso's presence wasn't lost, so the coffee flavor stayed alive right down to the last sip. It went down so smoothly that before I knew it, the cup was already empty lol.

If you're looking for good coffee in Yangjae and especially love nutty, rich lattes, you have to try the Helsinki Latte!!

Garlic salt bread: crisp outside, soft inside

The garlic salt bread (₩4,200) I ordered alongside the Helsinki Latte exceeded expectations too! The outside was baked golden and crisp while the inside was moist and soft — a proper crisp-outside, soft-inside bake, T.T

With one bite, the buttery richness and salty garlic flavor spread through my mouth and I just kept reaching for more. Plain salt bread is already good, but adding fragrant garlic makes it nearly impossible not to love lol.

It went perfectly with the nutty, smooth Helsinki Latte too, making it easy to enjoy alongside the coffee. I thought they were only serious about coffee, but the bread was delicious too, so this place also stuck with me as a good bakery café in Yangjae-dong!

Mini Male's original levain cookie, worth ordering to go

Personally, the dessert I enjoyed most was the original levain cookie (₩4,500). Just looking at how thick and chunky it was gave off proper levain cookie vibes!!

The outside was baked slightly crisp while the inside was moist and dense, so the texture alone was great. With one bite, the deep richness of butter and sweet chocolate spread throughout my mouth, and the chewy, moist, weighty texture — not too hard — was totally my type!!

A sip of Helsinki Latte followed by a bite of levain cookie was such a perfect combo haha. I came here hearing it was a latte spot, but I had no idea the desserts near Yangjae Citizen's Forest would be this good too lol.

The original levain cookie I had in-store was so delicious that I ended up curious about the other flavors.

So I packed one each of the dark s'mores cookie and the matcha chocolate chip levain cookie!! Mini Male's five handmade cookie varieties are apparently baked fresh daily by professional pastry chefs at their bakery lab in Gaepo-dong and sent out to each branch.

Other bakery items like scones and croissants are also baked in-store every morning, following a same-day baked, same-day discarded policy, so you can enjoy them fresh, which I loved! For a coffee-focused shop, they're surprisingly serious about their bakery too, so I'd recommend this place to anyone looking for a good bakery café in Yangjae-dong haha.
