Sangam-dong eel restaurant team dinner for 4: salt & bokbunja, Ryeok

In short

Ryeok Minmul Jangeogui Jeonmunjeom (력 민물장어구이전문점) is a freshwater eel grill restaurant in Sangam-dong, Mapo, Seoul, near Digital Media City Station. After wrapping up a big project, the writer brought a team of 4 and ordered 2 servings of premium live Japonica salt-grilled eel and 2 servings of bokbunja (Korean black raspberry) sauce-grilled eel; staff grilled everything at the table, so the team could focus on talking. Verdict: alternating the clean salt-grilled eel with the gently sweet-and-spicy bokbunja eel is what makes a team dinner at Ryeok Minmul Jangeogui Jeonmunjeom.

First photo of the visit to Ryeok eel restaurant in Sangam-dong

Doesn't it feel like, now that the weather is heating up, your energy suddenly drains and you get tired so fast? That's exactly when you need a proper stamina meal to restore your body.

Ryeok eel restaurant, a Digital Media City team dinner spot

I found it while hunting for a proper Digital Media City spot for a team dinner with my coworkers, and it honestly delivered far beyond what I expected.

Why we picked Ryeok Minmul Jangeogui Jeonmunjeom for a Sangam-dong team dinner

Ryeok Minmul Jangeogui Jeonmunjeom is a Sangam-dong eel house I picked for a stamina-food dinner with teammates who were wiped out after finishing a big project. Instead of the usual pork belly or raw fish, we all agreed on a special stamina dish that would really boost everyone's energy.

There are countless restaurants around Sangam-dong, but a place where you can enjoy genuinely good eel is harder to find than you'd think.

That's how I found Ryeok. It's close to Digital Media City Station, so it's easy to reach, and the clean, stylish interior stood out from the entrance.

Clean interior at the entrance and inside Ryeok eel restaurant

It's completely different from the noisy, smoke-filled image of a typical eel place, and I was proud of myself for choosing such a refined spot for a Digital Media City team dinner.

What did 4 people order, and which side dishes came with it?

There were 4 of us, and we ordered Ryeok's signature dishes evenly: 2 servings of premium live Japonica salt-grilled eel and 2 servings of premium live Japonica bokbunja sauce-grilled eel.

As soon as we ordered, the banchan (side dishes) were set out neatly: shredded ginger, myeongi namul (wild garlic-chive pickle), white kimchi, fresh ssam vegetables and more, all great partners for eel. You could feel the care in every little dish, so our expectations were already high before the main course arrived.

How does the live Japonica salt-grilled eel taste?

The live Japonica salt-grilled eel at Ryeok was overwhelmingly thick and meaty, and a staff member grilled it for us from start to finish. When the salt-grilled eel arrived first, the whole team gasped at the same time! Maybe because it's premium domestic live Japonica, a top-grade variety, nothing like cheap eel, the thickness of the meat was truly impressive.

A skilled staff member grilled the visibly fresh eel for us at the perfect doneness, from beginning to end.

Since they carefully tended it so it never burned, we could just relax and focus on talking, which was so nice. I thought it would suit an important business meeting or a big Sangam-dong team lunch where the conversation can't be interrupted.

I first tried a golden, well-cooked piece with no sauce at all. The moment it hit my mouth, the outside was crisp and the inside juicy, and the rich, nutty flavor unique to eel spread softly.

The soft texture and clean, mild taste are so good that you never get tired of it. Every bite made me exclaim, and I instantly understood why everyone recommends this as the number one eel spot in Sangam-dong. Dip shredded ginger in the house teriyaki sauce, then wrap it with the eel in a myeongi namul leaf and it's pure heaven!

How is bokbunja sauce-grilled eel different from salt-grilled eel?

The bokbunja sauce-grilled eel at Ryeok is made with a special sauce based on bokbunja (Korean black raspberry), soaked right into the flesh of the eel. The bokbunja grill we tried next offered a different charm. The special sauce, with healthy bokbunja as its base, had soaked softly and deeply into the flesh of the premium live Japonica eel.

The sauce wasn't too sweet or harsh, just gently spicy-sweet, and it cut the richness of the eel, so I devoured it without getting tired of it until the last piece.

It was a fantastic sauce that showed the dignity of a real Sangam-dong eel specialist. I absolutely recommend alternating bites: one of the clean salt grill, one of the savory bokbunja grill!

Is Ryeok a good spot for a team lunch or dinner in Sangam-dong?

Ryeok has a spacious hall and private rooms, which made it comfortable for a group meal. Even a famous restaurant can ruin the mood when you visit, with awkward parking or an interior that's too loud and cramped, right?

But Ryeok has a roomy, pleasant layout and fully equipped private rooms, so it was wonderful for spending cozy time just among ourselves.

For office workers, lunchtime efficiency is everything, and since the staff grill the premium eel quickly and expertly, you can enjoy a high-end stamina meal neatly without worrying about time. That's a big plus.

Spread of grilled eel at Ryeok enjoyed as a team meal

I can promise that among the many Digital Media City team dinner candidates around Sangam-dong, this one stands out for satisfaction.

200% satisfied: a Sangam-dong eel restaurant I'd definitely revisit

We finished our meal at Ryeok by wrapping up the very last tail piece in shredded ginger and white kimchi. We wrapped it up neatly and ended a truly happy, filling meal.

The balance between the premium live Japonica salt grill and the bokbunja grill was so good that the teammates kept praising it throughout the meal.

Amazingly, when I stood up after eating, I felt energy surge through my body, like I'd been fully recharged! I feel like I can handle this summer's heat now.

If you're looking for a no-fail eel restaurant near Sangam-dong, or a refined Digital Media City dinner or a speedy yet upscale Sangam-dong team lunch to recharge with precious colleagues, don't hesitate and go to Ryeok! Clean facilities, friendly service and overwhelming eel flavor, a perfect triple combination that will be a choice you won't regret.
