On a day when I had an evening plan in Gangnam,
I was looking for a café with a nice atmosphere and ended up visiting Upper and Under. In photos, it had looked lovely with sunlight streaming in during the day, so I had been curious about it. Since I visited in the evening, it felt quite different from daytime. Actually, the calm feeling of the evening with the lights on was really nice too.
A place with a great atmosphere from the entrance
The first thing that caught my eye as soon as I entered was the lush green trees. Their leaves swayed gently whenever the wind blew, and for a moment I almost forgot this was a café right in the middle of Gangnam. Seeing this kind of greenery in the city put me in a good mood before I had even gone inside.
Past the antique-style stairs
The antique-style stairs I saw as I headed farther in were impressive too. When I went up the stairs, I found a wide selection of desserts inside.
There were quite a few options, from cakes and tiramisu to pies and assorted baked treats, so I had only planned to have coffee but naturally found myself looking over the desserts too.

This is what I ordered that day. Maybe because it was evening, I was craving cold coffee, and it made a nice combination with dessert.
The Einspänner in particular was a good choice for a day when I was in the mood for sweet dessert, since I could enjoy the soft cream and coffee together.
The tiramisu went well with the coffee too.
It would be nice for a date or get-together too
Rather than feeling overly crowded or noisy, Upper and Under had a European-inspired atmosphere that was good for sitting down and chatting comfortably. So I thought it would suit plans with friends, a date, or a casual gathering better than just popping in alone for a moment.
It is also easy enough to get to if you have plans near Sinnonhyeon Station, and it is within walking distance of Gangnam Station, so
it could be a nice option if you are looking for a café near Gangnam Station but do not mind walking a little farther for somewhere atmospheric. I visited in the evening.
The time I visited was in the evening. During the day, the natural light and greenery seem to come together for a brighter, fresher feeling, while in the evening the added lighting made it feel calm and cozy. That is why I would like to visit again during the day next time. I think the atmosphere would feel quite different depending on the time, even in the same space.

There are so many cafés around Sinnonhyeon, but if you are looking for a space that feels a little different rather than one with a similar atmosphere, Upper and Under could be a good choice. From the greenery at the entrance and the antique-style stairs to the varied desserts, it was fun just looking around the space too.
With an atmosphere that is great for chatting comfortably over coffee and dessert, I think it is worth stopping by if you are looking for a café near Sinnonhyeon. Next time, I would like to visit during the day and compare it for myself with the evening atmosphere.
