Hongdae Korean BBQ craving: meat, naengmyeon, then rice: Gogikkun
In short
Gogikkun Gim Chunbae Hongdae Main Branch (고기꾼김춘배 홍대본점) is a charcoal Korean BBQ restaurant on the third floor of a building on Hongik-ro 3-gil in Hongdae, Seoul. On a day with a sudden meat craving, the writer ordered the hanwoo (Korean beef) and hanDon (Korean pork) set for two, half-and-half naengmyeon (cold noodles) and kkakttukbap (rice dish) at once. The food came out as meat, then noodles, then rice, and staff grilled the meat. The hanwoo chuck flap (salchi) was the highlight, making Gogikkun Gim Chunbae a go-to when you want Korean beef and pork in one meal.

How do you get to Gogikkun Gim Chunbae Hongdae Main Branch?
Gogikkun Gim Chunbae Hongdae Main Branch (고기꾼김춘배 홍대본점) is on the third floor of a building with a clothing shop on the first floor. Some days you suddenly crave meat, you know? I did, so I headed to Gogikkun Gim Chunbae Hongdae Main Branch, famous in Hongdae for its pork belly.

Because it's on the third floor, it's easy to walk right past, so check the map carefully! I actually missed it, haha. Look for the clothing store on the first floor; the restaurant is on the third floor of that building. Even the entrance was fun. You go in through a small door, which felt like stepping into another world!

Atmosphere and seating at Gogikkun Gim Chunbae Hongdae Main Branch
The restaurant had wooden tables and a row of partitioned seats. Each table had some space around it, so it didn't feel too cramped next to the neighbors, and it was comfortable for chatting over meat. Maybe because it's Hongdae, there were definitely a lot of foreign guests too.

What happens if you order the hanwoo/hanDon set with naengmyeon and rice at once?
If you order the hanwoo/hanDon set for two together with half-and-half naengmyeon (cold noodles) and kkakttukbap (diced rice) from the start, they come out in order: meat, noodles, then rice. That day I didn't want just pork, I wanted hanwoo and hanDon together, so I chose the set for two. Since the dishes came one after another, it was nice to enjoy them one at a time through the meal.

A phrase caught my eye: "We will make a restaurant where one person brings 100 people."

The hanwoo that day was chuck flap, with mushrooms and corn on the plate
The hanwoo in that day's set for two was salchi (chuck flap). Hanwoo and hanDon came together on one plate, with mushrooms and corn tucked between the meat. The salchi had tight, fine marbling that caught my eye even before it went on the grill.

Does Gogikkun Gim Chunbae Hongdae Main Branch grill the meat for you?
Yes, the staff grill the meat for you, and that was honestly the most convenient thing here. At a BBQ place, conversation often stops while you grill, or you keep worrying about how done the meat is. Here the staff took care of it, so I could just eat comfortably. They flip it and cook it to a good doneness, so I didn't have to keep checking the grill the whole meal. So easy!
Charcoal-grilled hanwoo chuck flap and raw galbi meat
I tried the salchi as soon as it was nicely cooked, and it was tender, as expected. Sizzling over the charcoal, it melted softly in my mouth!

Of the meats that day, the salchi was my favorite. Well, beef is what I like best, haha.

The saenggalbi-sal (raw galbi meat) was moist and tender once fully grilled, and it vanished in a flash!

In between I ate the side dishes too. Eating only meat can make the taste lopsided, but with the sides I could change up my palate along the way. Best of all, I could leave the grilling to someone else and slowly enjoy the naengmyeon and rice too, haha.

What is half-and-half naengmyeon?
The half-and-half naengmyeon at Gogikkun Gim Chunbae Hongdae Main Branch lets you have both mulnaengmyeon (cold broth noodles) and bibimnaengmyeon (spicy mixed noodles) in one order. It came out after I'd eaten a fair amount of meat, and it's a good order when you can't pick between the two. The cool mulnaengmyeon cleaned up my mouth between bites of meat, and the spicy bibimnaengmyeon went well with the meat too.

Finishing with kkakttukbap topped with seaweed and green onion
Last came the kkakttukbap. I was already full from the meat and noodles, but when the rice arrived I kept eating anyway. The rice topped with seaweed and green onion went well with the meat, and it finished the meal on a hearty note.

Is Gogikkun Gim Chunbae Hongdae Main Branch worth going back to?
That day I ordered the set with hanwoo and hanDon together plus naengmyeon and rice, so I ate in order from the meat to the meal dishes. Not having to grill myself, since the staff did it, was really convenient. The hanwoo came as salchi that day, which made the meal even more satisfying for someone who loves tender meat. When I want to eat pork belly in Hongdae and enjoy hanwoo alongside it, I think I'll remember Gogikkun Gim Chunbae Hongdae Main Branch.
