Hongdae dessert café for hours of chatting: fig soufflé at Think Fruit

Think Fruit is a dessert café in Hongdae, Mapo, Seoul, a 4-minute walk from Exit 7 of Hongik Univ. Station, serving soufflés made with seasonal fruit. The writer and a friend ordered a fig soufflé, a strawberry latte topped with Häagen-Dazs and an Einspänner (coffee topped with cream), and the Think Fruit fig soufflé ranked among the softest soufflés the writer has ever had. With big windows and plenty of daylight, Think Fruit is a Hongdae dessert café made for hours of chatting with a friend.

Hongdae Korean BBQ at a round table, scallion salad pairing: Gogikkun

Gogikkun Gimchunbae Hongdae Supgil Branch (고기꾼김춘배 홍대숲길점) is a Korean BBQ restaurant serving hanwoo (Korean beef) and Korean pork near Gyeongui Line Forest Park in Mapo, Seoul. The writer and a friend sat at a round table and shared the hanwoo and Korean pork set for 2 (600g, ₩109,000), grilled by staff in order from salchisal (beef chuck flap) to pork neck, then finished with half-and-half naengmyeon (cold noodles) and fried rice. Gogikkun Gimchunbae is a good pick in Hongdae when you want beef and pork in one meal and would rather talk than grill.

Sangbong baby octopus spot on a rainy day, bean sprout soup: Joajukne

Joajukne Jjukkumi is a Korean baby octopus (jjukkumi) restaurant on the Sangbong food street in Jungnang, Seoul. On a rainy day, the writer, a local regular on a second visit, ordered the jjuksam (baby octopus and pork belly) + sungnyung (scorched-rice tea) + assorted add-ons set at ₩18,900 for 2 people. Staff stir-fried it at the table, served with a refreshing bean sprout soup and a self-serve side bar. Verdict: Joajukne Jjukkumi is the Sangbong Station jjuksam spot the writer returns to whenever a baby octopus craving hits.

Sinnonhyeon Korean BBQ revisit: Jeju thick-cut pork with aged kimchi

Deo Bareun Jeongyuk Sikdang Gangnam Sinnonhyeon Station Main Branch is a butcher-style Korean BBQ restaurant near Exits 3 and 4 of Sinnonhyeon Station in Gangnam, Seoul. After enjoying a company dinner there last year, the writer came back for 600g of Jeju black pork geun-gogi (thick-cut pork) for 69,000 won. Staff grilled the pork, and the writer tried it in turn with salt, seasoned lettuce, myeongi (pickled wild garlic leaves) and aged kimchi. Switching up the side-dish pairings and the not-too-salty aged kimchi make Deo Bareun Jeongyuk Sikdang a Sinnonhyeon BBQ spot worth revisiting.
