Yeonnam-dong dim sum dinner by the open kitchen: Panda Dim Sum

In short

Panda Dim Sum is a Peking duck and dim sum restaurant on the 2nd floor of a red brick building on Donggyo-ro 38an-gil in Yeonnam-dong, Mapo-gu, Seoul. On a weekday dinner for two, the writer ordered half a Peking duck (₩39,000), xiaolongbao soup dumplings (₩8,000), truffle shumai (₩9,000) and mala bibim noodles (₩13,000), left full, and found the truffle shumai the most memorable dish. Panda Dim Sum fills up even on weekday evenings, so booking ahead on Naver is the smart move.

The weekday evening atmosphere at Panda Dim Sum

The place isn't huge, but the tables are spaced out generously so it never feels cramped! It has an open kitchen, so you can watch the cooking happen right in front of you. I visited on a weekday evening and it was already pretty full! You can book on Naver, so make sure to reserve before you go~~

Half Peking duck for ₩39,000 — how do you eat it?

Half Peking duck (₩39,000). The dish I was most looking forward to was, of course, the Peking duck — it's something you don't often get to eat in Korea, so I had high hopes. The staff kindly explained how to eat it deliciously! First, dip the crispy fried duck skin in sugar. Savory and crunchy — so good ⬇️

Wrap the duck meat, cucumber and green onion in a pancake, then add sauce! The moist duck paired so well with the sweet-savory sauce. The chewy pancakes come in generous portions too, haha — no matter how many wraps you make, they never seem to run out lol

Mala bibim noodles for ₩13,000 — how spicy is it?

Mala bibim noodles, ₩13,000. It was spicier and more tingling than I expected! The mala flavor went great with the meat that came with it, and it paired really well with the green onions haha. If you're craving something bold and spicy, order this dish without a doubt!!! The portion was surprisingly generous too.

Truffle shumai vs. xiaolongbao — which is better?

Next up, two kinds of dim sum! Pour the table soy sauce over the ginger they give you and eat it that way! Let me describe each one

Truffle shumai (₩9,000)

The truffle aroma isn't overpowering, just subtle, and the broth inside was incredible!! Honestly I ordered it without expecting much, but it ended up being the best thing I ate that day. Think of it as a truffle version of shumai! If you love truffle, you have to try this~!

Xiaolongbao (₩8,000)

I'm the type who eats xiaolongbao just for the broth inside!! lol. As expected, it was delicious, and the wrapper was nice and chewy. That said, personally I liked the truffle shumai just a bit more!

Who should visit Panda Dim Sum?

I loved that you can enjoy Peking duck and dim sum along with a whole range of other Chinese dishes here!!! The Peking duck in particular would be perfect for a special occasion or anniversary meal, and I'd also recommend this Yeonnam-dong restaurant for a family meal or a get-together with friends~~ The truffle shumai and the Peking duck are must-orders for everyone!!!
