Jongno 3-ga bakery garlic bread with fresh figs: Munhwa Bakery

In short

Munhwa Bakery is a takeout-only bakery near Exit 7 of Jongno 3-ga Station in Jongno, Seoul, open 11am to 8pm. Arriving 10 minutes before the 11am opening, I picked up coffee bread for 5,800 won and garlic bread for 6,800 won, eating the coffee bread with a latte at a nearby cafe and the garlic bread at home with fresh figs and a matcha latte. The moist garlic bread and the mocha-cream-filled coffee bread both made the early trip to Munhwa Bakery worth it.

Exterior view of Munhwa Bakery in Jongno 3-ga

I went to Chunwondang Korean medicine clinic in Jongno early in the morning, and while I was in the area I stopped by a nearby Jongno 3-ga favorite, Munhwa Bakery. I was craving something sweet with lots of cream in coffee for breakfast.

This place became a huge hit for its garlic bread and coffee bread, so since I was already up early, I decided to go all-in on an open-run. I'd heard that many breads sell out if you go later in the day, so I hurried over — and once I arrived, I was glad I'd rushed.

Line forming outside Munhwa Bakery before opening

"Wait, people are already lining up the moment the bakery opens?" I thought — but after tasting it myself, I understood immediately why so many people come here.

What I bought this time were the two signature menu items of Munhwa Bakery: garlic bread and coffee bread.

Munhwa Bakery location and opening time: how early to line up?

Munhwa Bakery is close to Exit 7 of Jongno 3-ga Station, and opens at 11am. I arrived around 10:50am and waited 10 minutes.

The store is quite small, so it's not the kind of place where you can browse leisurely like a big bakery chain. Only two parties can enter at a time. Anyone beyond that has to wait outside and enter in turn, so a line naturally forms outside when it gets busy.

It closes at 8pm, and is closed one day on September 25 for Chuseok.

Even while I was standing in line, I kept seeing customers coming to buy bread. If there's a specific bread you really want, it's better to visit a bit earlier.

Why is Munhwa Bakery still this busy?

This place has been buzzing on social media as one of the "three great bakeries of Seoul" and a "bakery of a lifetime." When I went, everyone from young people in their twenties to foreign tourists was lined up — I have no idea how they all found out about it.

Munhwa Bakery has no seating inside and operates as takeout only. The usual approach is to quickly buy what you want, then eat while strolling around Ikseon-dong, Samcheong-dong, or Anguk-dong, or take it home.

Coffee bread, 5,800 won: breakfast with a latte at a nearby cafe

I ordered coffee bread (₩5.8) and garlic bread (₩6.8) at Munhwa Bakery. The garlic bread was large, so I decided to save it for home, and first tried the soft, chewy coffee bread with coffee at a nearby cafe for breakfast.

At a glance it looks pricey, but it's genuinely large, and packed inside with sweet, nutty mocha cream.

Once you taste it, the price makes total sense — it's a premium-tasting bread. When I asked them to pack it, they cut this long coffee bread in half to fit it in the bag. Luckily, that meant I could eat it outside without getting my hands messy.

It's not just artificial coffee flavoring — once it's in your mouth, a subtle, nutty roasted-bean flavor spreads through fully.

Coffee bread with castella crumbs, bitten into

The outside was covered in something like castella crumbs, and it was moist and very soft. Taking a bite, the inside had a satisfying chewy texture, so I could enjoy it right to the last bite without getting tired of it.

Having a light piece in the morning paired with a warm caffe latte was a really clean, wonderful combination. It wasn't overly sweet, and the deep mocha flavor characteristic of a carefully made handmade bread felt comforting.

Garlic bread, 6,800 won: now I see why it's famous

I slowly tasted Munhwa Bakery's garlic bread at home with fresh figs after finishing up my errands in Jongno 3-ga. At first I expected the usual crispy garlic bread, but the texture turned out to be a bit different once I tried it.

The outside has a slight crispiness, but overall it leans moist and soft.

Above all, the garlic butter flavor is quite intense. It's not just a bit of sauce brushed on the surface — the sweet, nutty garlic flavor soaks all the way inside, so with one bite the distinctive garlic bread aroma hits you strongly.

That said, it's not overpoweringly pungent with garlic alone — a sweet, nutty flavor comes along with it, so it's not too much. Personally, I felt this bread's charm lies less in crispiness and more in how the moist bread soaks up the garlic butter cream all the way through the baguette, blending together richly.

Soft garlic bread enjoyed with a matcha latte

So if you prefer soft, moist garlic bread over crispy, baked-hard versions, this will suit your taste better. Pairing it with soft, sweet fresh figs was heavenly. Even though I'd already had coffee earlier, I wanted another drink, so this time I paired it with a matcha latte. It tasted incredibly luxurious.

Final verdict on Munhwa Bakery

Munhwa Bakery, a Jongno 3-ga bakery favorite, truly lives up to being called a "bakery of a lifetime worth waiting in line for" — you can feel the craftsman's touch throughout.

The store itself is small, but it stocks currently trendy breads at excellent quality, and each piece is generously sized enough that one alone is filling. Next time, I'd love to try the cream-filled onion bagel I regrettably missed this time, along with other distinctive breads.

Munhwa Bakery bread packaging laid out

These days it's hard to find a distinctive handmade specialty bakery like this — often I'd rather skip bread altogether than settle for the usual franchise stuff. But here, I could clearly feel a difference in depth, in ingredient quality and technique.

If you have business in Jongno 3-ga or Ikseon-dong, all you bread lovers out there should definitely remember this place and pay it a visit.
