Yeoksam Chinese lunch: mapo tofu rice half-and-half, Jjamppong Jijon

In short

Jjamppong Jijon Yeoksam Branch is a Chinese restaurant in Gangnam, Seoul, a five-minute walk from Yeoksam Station Exit 3. The order here was the half-and-half jjajang and mapo tofu rice (13,000 won), rice noodle jjamppong in the basic spice level (13,000 won) and a small glutinous tangsuyuk, or sweet-and-sour pork (20,000 won), and the soft rice noodles and the spicy scallop broth were the highlights. Jjamppong Jijon Yeoksam Branch suits a solo lunch just as well as a smarter dinner for two.

Today I'm writing up Jjamppong Jijon, a great Yeoksam Station lunch spot for Chinese food that's also perfect for solo dining! This place is great whether you're eating alone with something simple, or ordering a bunch of dishes for a hearty feast. True to its name, spicy and tangy jjamppong, jjajangmyeon, mapo tofu, and chewy glutinous sweet-and-sour pork — I ate so well haha.

What we ordered at Jjamppong Jijon, and what it costs

I couldn't believe mapo tofu was an option for the half-and-half menu — so happy, hehe. Here's what we ordered:

  • Half jjajang + mapo tofu rice ₩13,000
  • Rice noodle jjamppong (basic flavor) ₩13,000
  • Small glutinous sweet-and-sour pork ₩20,000
  • Zero-sugar cider ₩3,000

Apparently zero-sugar cider has the least sugar among sodas or something like that? Can't skip the soda at a Chinese restaurant though, so we ordered it ㅋ_ㅋ

The self-serve bar, down to Korean-grown kkakdugi

The self-serve bar at Jjamppong Jijon Yeoksam Branch has everything from a coffee machine to yulmu tea and plum tea, great for a simple drink before or after your meal. Eek. And of course the essentials — danmuji, onion, jjacai — are all there, plus domestically grown kkakdugi (radish kimchi). I usually don't even touch kkakdugi at Chinese restaurants, but since this Yeoksam lunch spot had domestic kkakdugi, I tried it — and it was so good!

What the dining room at Jjamppong Jijon feels like

Oh, and the interior is really spacious and clean, plus upscale. Jjamppong Jijon's interior felt so much more upscale than expected that I told my boyfriend it must be a Gangnam thing haha. The interior was really wide and had a clean, comfortable overall atmosphere! Jjamppong Jijon really does have a classy vibe. The tables were spaced generously too, so there was no cramped feeling while eating, and the place clearly looked well maintained, making for a comfortable meal. If you're looking for a clean, pleasant Chinese restaurant for lunch near Yeoksam Station, I'd recommend this one too.

Rice noodle jjamppong, basic spice: how soft are the noodles?

And this rice noodle jjamppong is exactly why I love Jjamppong Jijon! Since the noodles are rice noodles, they're softer than regular jjamppong noodles and much gentler on the stomach >.< The scallops are generous too, adding a refreshing seafood flavor to the broth, and the spicy yet clean taste of the broth was truly delicious ㅠ.ㅠ If you like rice noodles, you'll enjoy this even more!

Small glutinous tangsuyuk: crisp outside, chewy inside

Glutinous sweet-and-sour pork!!!!! Generous portion, crispy yet chewy texture — absolute perfection. ㅠ.ㅠ It's the kind of sweet-and-sour pork you keep reaching for even when you're full! It's topped with fresh onion, which makes it even tastier when eaten together. It goes well with both jjajangmyeon and jjamppong, so definitely order it as a side and try it, hehe.

Jjajangmyeon and mapo tofu rice: why the half-and-half wins

Jjamppong and jjajangmyeon, the two pillars of Chinese food — how could anyone pick just one? I can't do it ㅠㅠ When I'm eating jjajangmyeon I want jjamppong, and when I'm eating jjamppong I want jjajangmyeon ㅋㅋ That's the real sweet-and-savory combo, isn't it. The jjajangmyeon is sweet and savory with great umami, and pairs wonderfully with rice too.

For the glutinous sweet-and-sour pork, the sauce is only poured on the bottom layer and not too much, which I actually liked better. It lets you keep the crispy-yet-moist texture all the way to the last bite. Yarr~ Writing this post is making me want to eat it again.. hehe

Soft, melt-in-your-mouth tofu with spicy, savory mapo sauce! The mapo tofu has the sauce well soaked in, so scooping up a big spoonful of rice adds a gentle spiciness plus umami — it's an absolute delicacy!

Jjamppong Jijon, a great Yeoksam Station Chinese restaurant for lunch, works well for solo dining and, with its upscale interior and atmosphere, also makes a great date spot. And you know Chinese food always tastes better eaten in person, right? Hehe, definitely visit and try it!
