Dongtan jjamppong restaurant spice level 2 vs Shin Ramyeon: Bultina

In short

Bultina Kkomak Jjamppong Dongtan Namgwangjang Branch is a cockle jjamppong (spicy seafood noodle soup) specialist on Nojak-ro at Dongtan Namgwangjang in Hwaseong, Gyeonggi. A married couple ordered cockle jjamppong at spice level 2 and a double portion of jajangmyeon to share for dinner: level 2 felt about as hot as Shin Ramyeon, and the jajangmyeon sauce was thick enough to scoop with a spoon. Bultina is the place to note for a day when you want chewy cockles and a fiery broth instead of an ordinary jjamppong.

My husband and I were debating what to eat for dinner and suddenly craved something spicy and brothy, so we went hunting for a Dongtan jjamppong spot. But instead of an ordinary jjamppong place, we found somewhere with a slightly unusual name: Bultina Kkomak Jjamppong Dongtan Namgwangjang Branch🔥

Have you guys ever had cockle jjamppong? I'm used to mussels, squid, or shrimp in jjamppong, but cockles as the main seafood was new to me. I love cockles, I love jjamppong — put them together? I can't resist that haha ㅋㅋㅋㅋㅋ

Where Bultina Dongtan Namgwangjang is and what the restaurant feels like

Bultina Kkomak Jjamppong Dongtan Namgwangjang Branch is a Chinese restaurant on Nojak-ro near Dongtan Namgwangjang. We stopped by for dinner around the plaza, and the sign had 'cockle jjamppong' printed huge, so we spotted it from far away haha. Since cockle jjamppong isn't exactly a common menu item, I was already curious what it would taste like before even walking in👀

Bright, clean tables inside the Chinese restaurant

Inside, the place was clean and bright overall. There were solo seats and bigger tables for groups, so it felt comfortable whether you're eating alone, grabbing lunch as an office worker, or having dinner as a couple like us. Chinese restaurants can sometimes have a strong oil smell or a slightly sticky floor ㅋㅋㅋㅋ but this place was clean inside, which I really liked!

What is cockle jjamppong?

As the name suggests, cockle jjamppong is Bultina's signature dish. Unlike regular jjamppong, they use fresh cockles — that's the defining feature. According to the shop's description, it's stir-fried fresh to order and the cockles are added to a broth with a smoky wok-fired flavor.

Ordering on the table tablet and picking spice level 2

Ordering was easy using the tablet installed at the table. Here's what we ordered that day:

  • 🔥 Cockle jjamppong
  • 🖤 Jajangmyeon (double portion)

Two dishes! When there's two of you, ordering different things and sharing beats each person eating their own, right? haha

And here's the important part! Cockle jjamppong lets you pick a spice level from 1 to 4. We didn't want it too mild, so we wanted some real heat and ordered level 2🌶️🌶️

Side dishes and the self-serve bar at Bultina

The basic sides were the eternal Chinese restaurant duo ㅋㅋㅋㅋ pickled radish and onion! Chunjang (black bean paste) came alongside too, so you dip the onion before digging into the jajangmyeon~ Anything you ran low on was available at the self-serve bar, which was convenient. Personally I eat a ton of pickled radish whenever I have Chinese food ㅋㅋㅋㅋ

How the cockle jjamppong tastes and how chewy the cockles are

Today's star arrives!🔥

The cockle jjamppong finally arrived! Doesn't it look pretty spicy just from the visual?? Plump cockles kept showing up between the noodles. The chewy, springy texture unique to cockles suited the spicy broth even better than I expected.

The noodles were properly soaked in the red broth, so slurping them brought that spicy kick right up, and biting into cockles here and there gave a completely different texture from regular jjamppong. The broth wasn't just about heat either — it had that refreshing seafood taste mixed with a smoky wok flavor. Spicy but the kind that keeps you coming back for more haha

How spicy is spice level 2 at Bultina, really?

I picked spice level 2, and once I actually tried it, it wasn't anywhere near fire noodle territory for my taste. If anything, it felt about as spicy as Shin Ramyeon. Of course everyone's tolerance differs, but it's not the kind where your tongue hurts and you're sweating buckets! It's exactly the kind of broth that would be perfect for curing a hangover haha

Double-portion jajangmyeon and its spoon-thick sauce

And right next to the spicy cockle jjamppong: pitch-black double portion jajangmyeon! We ordered the double so my husband and I could share it. Adding a pinch of chili flakes makes it even better — that's just the rule, right? haha

Double portion jajangmyeon topped with chili flakes

At first you can see the white noodles underneath, but after mixing thoroughly, glossy jajangmyeon appears! ✨ It's important to scrape all the way to the bottom so the black bean sauce coats every noodle evenly ㅋㅋㅋㅋ The flavor was that sweet-savory jajangmyeon style we both love! Not too intense on either the salty or sweet side — easy to eat without feeling heavy.

The thick sauce was so appealing that I ended up scooping it up with a spoon ㅋㅋㅋㅋ Honestly if my stomach wasn't already full, I'd have wanted to add a bowl of rice and mix it all in haha

Sharing jjamppong and jajangmyeon when two people dine

Eating jajangmyeon right after the level 2 cockle jjamppong kicked off an endless loop: spicy → sweet and savory → spicy → sweet and savory ㅋㅋㅋㅋㅋㅋ This is exactly why, when you can't choose between jjamppong and jajangmyeon, you need to go as a pair. Order one of each and share🤣

And if you look at the last photo... do I even need to explain?ㅋㅋㅋㅋㅋㅋ We pretty much cleaned both bowls🤣 Ordering one cockle jjamppong and one double jajangmyeon to share with my husband for dinner turned out to be a great combo, and the portions were satisfying. If you're looking for Dongtan jjamppong and craving something a little different from the ordinary bowl, give Bultina Kkomak Jjamppong Dongtan Namgwangjang Branch a try for plump cockles alongside a proper spicy broth!🔥
