Yeonnam-dong bakery parking tips and a pretzel favorite: Mandong Jegwa

In short

Mandong Jegwa Yeonnam Branch (만동제과 연남점) is a bakery on Yeonhui-ro in Seodaemun, Seoul, and a famous stop on any Yeonnam-dong bakery crawl. On a third visit, the writer skipped the usual garlic baguette for a shrimp baguette, a pretzel, a bacon ciabatta and Ssuktteok Ssuktteok (mugwort rice cake bread), and the 5,000-won pretzel was the best of the four. Mandong Jegwa Yeonnam Branch has no parking lot of its own, so park at a nearby public lot and go early if you want a full choice of breads.

Will there still be bread if you go late in the afternoon?

If you go late in the afternoon, some kinds of bread are sold out. I arrived late again this time and a few breads were already gone, but there's such a wide variety that I could still pick what I wanted.

Since breads often sell out when you visit late in the afternoon, I recommend going a bit earlier if you want to buy lots of different kinds! And one more thing I notice every time I visit: the staff are all so friendly that bread shopping here is a pleasure ^^

So many kinds of bread, right? It was hard, but I narrowed the delicious Mandong Jegwa lineup down to four :)

4 Mandong Jegwa breads I picked instead of the garlic baguette

Shrimp baguette: shrimp-flavored cream and sweet potato mousse

The Mandong Jegwa shrimp baguette (₩5,800) is packed with rich shrimp-flavored cream inside, topped with sweet sweet potato mousse. I'd had the garlic baguette every single time, so this time I chose the popular shrimp baguette.🍤 If you enjoyed Mandong Jegwa's signature garlic baguette, I recommend trying the shrimp baguette too!

Pretzel: the best bread of the day

The Mandong Jegwa pretzel (₩5,000) has savory cheese on top and soft, sweet cream cheese inside. I loved the combination of savory cheese and sweet cream cheese. Personally, it was the best bread I had today!

Bacon ciabatta: salty bacon and cream

The Mandong Jegwa bacon ciabatta (₩4,900) has salty bacon and cream inside the ciabatta. Plain ciabatta plus salty bacon plus soft cream was really delicious.

Ssuktteok Ssuktteok: mugwort rice cake meets bread

The Mandong Jegwa Ssuktteok Ssuktteok (₩4,900) is a bread with a seriously cute name. The meeting of fragrant mugwort tteok (rice cake) and bread was fascinating. You get a strong mugwort tteok flavor and then a bread flavor too. It's pleasantly chewy, and the sliced almonds sprinkled on top add a nice texture. If you like both bread and tteok, give it a try!

Is Mandong Jegwa Yeonnam Branch worth going back to?

Mandong Jegwa Yeonnam Branch is the Yeonnam-dong bakery and Hongdae favorite that comes to mind every time I'm in the neighborhood. I loved being able to taste so many kinds of delicious bread.
