Seolleung Station restaurant Manmok | Elegant wood interior and an eel bowl spot 🐟

Main photo of the eel bowl at Manmok near Seolleung Station

Today I'm introducing Manmok, a Gangnam eel bowl restaurant that's great when you want a proper meal near Seolleung Station♡ I lived in Germany and Italy for 10 years in total, experiencing all kinds of European restaurants and dining culture, so when I eat out I don't just care about the taste. I also love looking at the atmosphere, the interior and the tableware! Manmok impressed me with its wood interior, from the entrance all the way through the dining room. So let me walk you through it from my point of view. 🤎

Where is Manmok near Seolleung Station, and what does it look like outside?

Manmok is at 9 Seolleung-ro 82-gil, Gangnam-gu, Seoul, on the 1st floor, in a side street near Seolleung Station. The exterior is done in dark wood with a sign in a brush-calligraphy style.

It's the type of place that shows its presence through materials and mood rather than flashy attention-grabbing. The heavy feel of the wood plus the calm of Japanese-style dining got me excited before I even went in. Even the long wooden bench out front blends naturally into the atmosphere. 🌿

Manmok's interior: wood and soft lighting

The interior is what I paid the most attention to at Manmok! The first things you see when you walk in are the dark wood counter and the warm indirect lighting. Ceramics and small objects sit neatly on the shelf above the kitchen, and the lighting running under the counter makes the space even cozier.

The tables and chairs match the overall wood tone for a unified look, and pillars and partitions divide the seating between tables. I especially liked how the dark wood, the stone-like floor and the yellowish lighting come together.

When I lived in Europe, I often felt how much a restaurant's interior enriches the experience of the food. Manmok felt the same to me: instead of over-decorating, it completes the mood with materials and lighting. ✨

I think it would suit eating alone or lunch with coworkers, and also days when you just want a meal in a calm atmosphere.

How much is the eel bowl at Manmok?

Manmok's wooden eel bowl menu

Manmok's signature dish is the eel bowl (unagi donburi), and you pick by the amount of eel: half an eel ₩26,000, a whole eel ₩39,000, or 1.5 eels ₩50,000. The menu isn't an ordinary paper one either; it uses wood and calm colors to carry on the restaurant's mood. I was impressed that even this small detail keeps to the concept.

  • Half eel bowl ₩26,000
  • Whole eel bowl ₩39,000
  • 1.5 eel bowl ₩50,000

How did the Kanto-style whole eel bowl taste?

What we ordered this time was Manmok's Kanto-style whole eel bowl for two! 🐟

Kanto-style whole eel bowl set at Manmok

The glossy grilled eel had a sweet sauce and a smoky char flavor that went really well with the rice. The Kanto-style eel, carefully grilled, had a subtle charcoal aroma and a sweet-salty sauce soaked into the surface that won me over from the first bite. 🔥

The inside was soft and moist, yet thick, and the more I chewed, the more the nutty flavor came out. The sauce lightly soaks into the rice grains, so with the eel it's a fantastic combination! 🥢 It wasn't overly greasy and the savory depth was strong, so Manmok's eel bowl got more appealing the more I ate.

Side dishes with Manmok's eel bowl

They carefully prepared a side salad plus wasabi, pickled ginger, sancho berries (Sichuan-like peppercorn) and pickled radish to bring out the eel's flavor. And they serve a mushroom broth alongside, which is an umami bomb!

On top of that came soft shrimp chawanmushi (savory steamed egg custard), crunchy white kimchi and sweet-and-sour radish salad, so I could enjoy it all cleanly without feeling heavy! 😊

Pouring mushroom broth over it for ochazuke

It's delicious as is, but I have a favorite way to eat it. 😋 After eating for a while, pour the mushroom broth that came with it over the eel bowl and enjoy it ochazuke (rice with broth) style!

It gives you a different, moist feel, so I enjoyed it to the very last bite♡

Manmok desserts: a dessert spot too???

To finish the meal at Manmok, we had matcha and black tea ice cream for dessert! 🍵🍦 Both flavors were delicious, so I was happy with the dessert too.

The owner's thoughtful touch in Manmok's restroom

Manmok restroom stocked with luxury brand amenities

Manmok's restroom is stocked with hand wash and hand & body lotion from luxury brands like Loewe, Jo Malone London, Byredo, Le Labo, Hermès, Kilian and Aesop. It wasn't only the food that impressed me at Manmok. The restroom is not just clean and tidy; these products were sitting right there. 😳✨ There's mouthwash and dental floss too!

I was so surprised, since I've never seen a Japanese restaurant care about details this much. It felt like they'd thoughtfully considered not just the dining space but even the small space where guests spend a moment! You can feel the owner's taste and sense in details like this. It's a place that gives you a pleasant experience beyond just a tasty meal. From food to space to tiny amenities, I was moved by Manmok near Seolleung Station! I think this thoughtfulness will make it stay in my memory longer. 🤎

How is the eel cooked at Manmok?

I'm told Manmok uses carefully selected Gochang freshwater eel and finishes it with the Japanese Kanto-style method, which brings out the eel's texture and clean taste. The eel is grilled once, brushed with a secret sauce, then grilled over charcoal two more times, which reduces the grease while keeping it tender and deeply flavorful!

With calm lighting and an elegant wood interior, it's a good space for focusing on your meal. It looked well suited to eating alone, dates, family meals, meals with parents, business meetings or company dinners. Group reservations are possible, so it's also good for visiting with a larger party!
