What kind of restaurant is Ilpum Chamsut Galbi in Dunpo, Asan?

I was trying to decide where to eat meat in Asan, and this time I landed on Ilpum Chamsut Galbi (일품참숯갈비)! The name itself is pretty bold — 'ilpum' basically means 'top-notch,' so it better not turn out to be just average. 😂
But it turns out this place isn't just calling itself 'top-notch' for show. Apparently they've been trimming and seasoning meat in the same spot for over 20 years. These days everything's about speed and convenience, but here the owner still hand-cuts and seasons the meat personally. 'Boss, are you really still doing this by hand in this day and age?' — but I guess that stubbornness is exactly what makes the flavor.

Parking: a shared lot with over 100 spaces
What I liked most, above everything, was the parking! There's a large shared parking lot right in front of the restaurant that fits over 100 cars, so if you drive there's much less circling around looking for a spot. Sometimes you go out for meat and end up burning half your energy just hunting for parking, but here parking alone earns a pass. 😆

What hasn't changed at Ilpum Chamsut Galbi in 20 years
What Ilpum Chamsut Galbi emphasizes is simple: good meat, hand-trimmed, hand-seasoned, charcoal. They say the galbi is sliced along the grain by hand and the seasoning is prepared fresh with care every day.
What really stood out was hearing they've kept up predawn prep work for 20 years. It's funny to think — we struggle just to get out of bed in the morning, and someone's already been cutting meat since before dawn. I'm hitting snooze one more time… meanwhile the owner's already trimming meat. 😂

I think this kind of consistency is what builds up 20 years. Apparently customers who used to come as students now come back married with kids, and people who moved away still stop by whenever they're back in town.
Maybe the real regulars at a good restaurant aren't the ones who say 'this is delicious!' once and never return, but the ones who come back years later. In that sense, Ilpum Chamsut Galbi's 20 years carry real weight.

The order: four servings of pork galbi at 16,000 won each
Now, the moment that matters more than any words — 4 servings of Ilpum Chamsut Galbi's pork galbi at ₩16,000 each!

Going to a meat restaurant and not eating meat would be like going to the movies and leaving after just smelling the popcorn. 😂 After we ordered, the basic side dishes started coming out one by one.

Once the side dishes start showing up at a BBQ place, my mind gets restless for no reason. 'The meat's not out yet, should I just try one?' Then, 'this is just a side dish, it's fine, right?' — and before you know it, you've filled up on sides before the meat even arrives. 😆 Still, Ilpum Chamsut Galbi provides a basic set of side dishes once, and you can order more if you need extra.

Add-on prices: steamed egg custard for 1,000 won
And here's another detail that caught my eye! Ilpum Chamsut Galbi's add-on menu prices are quite reasonable.
- Doenjang jjigae (soybean paste stew) ₩2,000
- Steamed egg custard ₩1,000
- Corn cheese ₩1,000
These days, when you check add-on prices while eating out, you often end up double-checking the menu board — but here it's more of a 'wait, is this the right price?' kind of surprise.

The ₩1,000 steamed egg custard in particular is the perfect low-commitment add-on while eating meat. Corn cheese is also ₩1,000. Of course, one of each is already provided as part of the basic sides. At this cost for extras, it feels like a genuinely good deal. At this price, 'should I order this too?' comes out naturally while eating.
Why pork galbi tastes better grilled over charcoal
And another highlight of Ilpum Chamsut Galbi — it's not gas flame but real charcoal! The moment the pork galbi hits the charcoal grill, the whole BBQ-restaurant atmosphere comes alive.

Sizzle—! That sound alone does it. Whether you're already full or not stops mattering. Your nose reacts first. Your eyes react too.

And your chopsticks react first of all. As the pork galbi cooks up golden brown, the subtle charcoal aroma adds a whole other layer — that smoky flavor really does play a huge role in meat like this. With hand-trimmed meat seasoned fresh daily, 20 years of accumulated know-how in prep and seasoning is clearly this place's strength.

Family dinners to company nights out: seating for up to 80
The dining room is fairly spacious, so it's fine for family visits and it also looks great for office dinners or group gatherings. They say it can seat up to 80. That makes it a pretty convenient spot for office workers looking for good restaurants near Asan Techno Valley.

Sitting right in the middle of Asan Smart Valley and Asan Techno Valley, it's easy to reach for nearby office workers and local residents, and it's also accessible from nearby knowledge-industry centers and apartment complexes. Coming from Cheonan-Asan Station (KTX/SRT) or Asan Station (Line 1), it's about a 15–20 minute taxi ride.

Is Ilpum Chamsut Galbi worth remembering in Dunpo, Asan?
Ilpum Chamsut Galbi doesn't feel like a place dressing itself up flashily and shouting 'we're an amazing restaurant!' It feels much more like a place that's simply kept doing its own thing steadily for 20 years — trimming meat from before dawn, seasoning it themselves, grilling over charcoal.
It's a way of sticking to the basics of a BBQ restaurant rather than chasing trends. And time accumulates in places like that. Customers who used to be students grow up and come back with their own kids. Isn't that the best proof a 20-year-old restaurant can offer?

In the end, a good restaurant is built more by returning customers than by advertising. If pork galbi is on your mind in Asan — especially if you're looking for a favorite spot in Dunpo, Asan Techno Valley, or Asan meat restaurants in general —

Ilpum Chamsut Galbi, unchanged for 20 years, is worth stopping by. And personally speaking… if after finishing 4 servings of pork galbi you're already thinking 'how many servings next time?' isn't the game already over? Go try it yourself and judge the strength of a BBQ restaurant that's held on in Dunpo, Asan for 20 years!
