Dongtan shabu-shabu restaurant: beef brisket vs pork neck, Pyeonbaek

Today I'm bringing you a review of Pyeonbaek Hoegwan Dongtan Branch, where I ate my fill near Dongtan Station haha.

I've been looking for a place that serves both hinoki-steamed meat and shabu-shabu together, and this place had steamed pork, shabu-shabu, and even a salad bar, so I ate until I was stuffed lol.

Inside the restaurant and the kids' play zone

The store was clean and spacious, which I liked 🤍 The place itself was tidy and the tables were spread far apart, so it never felt cramped and we could eat comfortably haha.

And what I liked most was the play zone! 🥹 There's a separate space for kids to play, which seemed great for families visiting together.

Eating out with kids is a bit of a battle sometimes lol, so having a space like this is genuinely reassuring 🤭 If you're looking for a Dongtan family dinner spot or somewhere to bring your kids, this is worth keeping in mind 💛

Starting with half mushroom broth, half spicy broth

A place serving hinoki-steamed pork plus shabu-shabu together?! 🤭 Once seated, you first choose your shabu-shabu broth. After some deliberation, we went with half mushroom broth, half spicy broth haha.

Then they prep the hinoki-steamed pork first, keeping it covered — after some time, staff open the lid for you. Waiting around in the meantime, you ask? Nope~~ lol, we immediately ran to the salad bar 🏃‍♀️💨

What's at the self-serve bar: jjolmyeon, tteokbokki and fried rice

The self-serve bar at Pyeonbaek Hoegwan Dongtan Branch had more variety than I expected! Quite a range of dishes were ready to go, so we grabbed bits of everything while waiting for the steamed pork haha.

From salad to jjolmyeon noodles, tteokbokki, fried rice, and more — a lot was on offer!

Since it's not just a shabu-shabu spot, you can also snack on side dishes in between,

which makes it a great option if you're coming with a group, since everyone can pick what they want. It felt like a Dongtan buffet where you grab a bit of this and that — I secretly loved that part lol.

Cypress-steamed meat in rice-paper wraps, with unlimited refills

As soon as the steamed pork arrived, we got the rice-paper wraps ready 🌯 Finally, the lid came off~~! Steam rising, and it looked absolutely mouthwatering just from the visual 🤭

We grabbed the rice-paper wrap ingredients from the self-serve bar right away to eat alongside the steamed pork! One piece of meat, some veggies, roll it up — pure deliciousness~~

And most importantly!!! The hinoki-steamed pork is all-you-can-eat~~

No need to hold back — we wrapped up three pieces at a time lol. Since we were eating it in rice-paper wraps, it just kept going in, and we really went all out.

If you love hinoki-steamed pork, this part will make you very happy!

Switching to shabu-shabu by tablet: beef brisket vs pork neck

Now let's move on to shabu-shabu 🍲 Once we'd eaten our fill of the steamed pork, it was shabu-shabu time~~

We used the staff-call tablet to request the switch to shabu-shabu, and the staff had it ready right away!

Being able to request this kind of thing easily through the tablet was really convenient haha.

There were two kinds of shabu-shabu meat: beef short rib (usamgyeop) and pork neck (mokshim). Personally speaking... I vote beef short rib!! 🙋‍♀️ lol

The beef short rib was really tender and delicious. The pork neck was clean-tasting and good too, but I'm just partial to tender beef short rib haha.

Shabu-shabu vegetables and the porridge finish

You can drop in as many shabu-shabu ingredients as you like~ We grabbed more from the self-serve bar and dunked them into the broth one by one lol.

Vegetables, mushrooms, and meat all went in~~ Best of all, the shabu-shabu meat is also all-you-can-eat, so if you're really hungry, you can truly eat as much as you want lol.

We finished with porridge~ All the ingredients are prepped, so you just grab them and boil them up ><

By the end, my stomach was totally stuffed... 🤣 But when it's this good, you just can't stop lol.
