Siyudang (시유당) is a three-story brunch and bakery café just before the entrance to Taehaksan Natural Recreation Forest in Pungse-myeon, Dongnam-gu, Cheonan. On a rainy day in the third week of October, the writer ordered the 455m Summit Pizza, a cream donut, deep chocolate salt bread, the Earl Grey Taehaksan Peak bread, a hot Americano and a lemon highball, and the café's carts and elevator made carrying the food easy. Siyudang is a large Cheonan café worth revisiting not just for its interior but for its cream-packed breads and spinach fresh-dough pizza.

Cheonan katsu spot for family gatherings: fish cutlet a must, Jinsim

Jinsim Wang Donkatsu Cheonan Buldang is a king pork cutlet and kalguksu (knife-cut noodle soup) restaurant in Buldang-dong, Seobuk-gu, Cheonan. A family of 4 came for a weekend get-together and ordered the Jinsim king pork cutlet (11,900 won), Jinsim fish cutlet (12,900 won), Jinsim cold jjolmyeon (9,900 won) and spicy anchovy kalguksu (9,400 won), enjoying the spacious dining room and the self-serve cream soup and udon broth. The writer's verdict: at Jinsim Wang Donkatsu Buldang, always order the fish cutlet alongside the king pork cutlet.

Village café in Baebang, Asan: dense scones at Small Town Coffee

Small Town Coffee is a countryside café in the middle of Galmae-ri village in Baebang-eup, Asan, South Chungcheong Province, with large windows overlooking rural scenery. The blogger ordered Malta Coffee (6,500 won), an iced Americano (5,500 won), a plain scone (4,000 won) and lemon cake (4,500 won); the dense, heavy scone and the rich, nutty Malta Coffee stood out, and an annex adds plenty of extra seating. Small Town Coffee is a good fit for anyone looking for a quiet Baebang café with easy parking or a café for a group meetup.

Cheonan pork galbi restaurant with kiosk side refills: Yukmian

Yukmian Cheonan Buldang is a pork galbi restaurant in Buldang-dong, Cheonan, that brings the ribs to the table fully grilled. Seoul Korean BBQ in Banpo, full at opening with roomy tables: Ugojip

Ugojip is a Korean BBQ beef restaurant in the basement of Banpo Shopping Town Building 5 in Seocho, Seoul, close to Express Bus Terminal Station. Arriving as a pair right at opening time, we ordered the 400g couple set for 49,000 won plus two bowls of rice, and Ugojip's tables filled up almost immediately. The wide tables, the woosamgyeop, tosisal and galbisal, and a hearty brisket doenjang jjigae stood out. Thanks to its roomy tables, Ugojip is a good beef restaurant in Banpo for family dinners and group gatherings.

Family duck baeksuk spot in Eumbong, Asan with mini ginseng: Oneungi

Oneungi Shabu Baeksuk (오능이샤브백숙) is a Korean restaurant in Eumbong-myeon, Asan, Chungnam, specializing in neungi (scaly hedgehog mushroom) shabu baeksuk, and a place the writer's family keeps coming back to. A family of three ordered the neungi duck shabu baeksuk (79,000 won), which came with a restorative mushroom set, one mini ginseng root per person and sticky rice, and they went from mushroom shabu-shabu to duck baeksuk to a sticky rice duck porridge finish. With its rich neungi broth and generous portions, Oneungi Shabu Baeksuk is a recommended restorative meal for family gatherings with elderly relatives.
