Daegu Korean restaurant: three share one abalone stew, Sin Yeongung

Sin Yeongung Cheonggukjang Haemulttukbaegi Seongseo Moda Outlet branch is a Korean restaurant on Seongseogongdan-ro in Dalseo, Daegu, serving seafood ttukbaegi (earthenware pot stew) and cheonggukjang (fermented soybean stew). Three people shared one generously sized live abalone seafood ttukbaegi (20,000 won) and filled out the table with a medium boiled octopus, a seafood chive pancake and shrimp tempura; the broth, made with 3 abalone, was the standout. Sin Yeongung is worth recommending for gatherings, company dinners and hangover meals where everyone wants to try a bit of several dishes.

Donburi restaurant in Daegu: smoky mini buta-don at Myeonsikdang

Myeonsikdang Keimyung University Branch is a Japanese restaurant on the second floor at 55 Seodang-ro 9-gil in Dalseo-gu, Daegu, serving tonkatsu, ramen, soba, rice bowls and pho. Two friends ordered the set for two with cold soba and mozzarella cheese katsu, then added hire katsu, a smoky mini buta-don (grilled pork rice bowl) and a lemonade. The smoky mini buta-don tasted far better than it looked, making it the side worth adding to any set at Myeonsikdang.

₩14,000 pork and squid combo at a Beomeo-dong Daegu Korean restaurant

Banwoldang Buja Sikdang Suseong Branch is a fire-grilled Korean restaurant on Beomeocheon-ro in Suseong-gu, Daegu. The writer ordered two servings of jikhwa oje-bokkeum (fire-grilled pork and squid stir-fry) at ₩14,000 per serving, a dish that comes with a countryside cheonggukjang (fermented soybean paste) stew for parties of two or more, plus unlimited ssam vegetables from the self-serve bar. The best surprise at Banwoldang Buja Sikdang was the free burdock fritter side dish — good enough that the writer wished she had bought a bag to take home.

Jung-gu Daegu soup restaurant with mixed-meat bowls: Hanwoojang

Hanwoojang is a 24-hour seolleongtang and gomtang (beef bone soup) restaurant on Gukchaebosang-ro in Jung-gu, Daegu. Over a weekday lunch with a friend, the writer ordered hanwoo ox head gomtang at 14,000 won and doganitang (ox tendon soup) at 15,000 won and asked the kitchen to mix the meat between the two bowls; the tendon was jelly-soft and melted in the mouth, while the broth stayed clean and mild. Hanwoojang is a good stop in Daegu when you want one plain, wholesome bowl of soup.
