Jeongjiyoung Coffee Roasters Hwahongmun Branch is a specialty coffee café that roasts its own beans, in an alley near Hwahongmun Gate in Haenggung-dong, Suwon. On a rainy weekday afternoon, the writer and a friend ordered an iced americano and a London Fog milk tea, and the spacious café's window seats, bar seats, group seats and rooftop stood out. For anyone who likes Earl Grey and vanilla, the London Fog milk tea at Jeongjiyoung Coffee Roasters Hwahongmun Branch is worth ordering.

Dongtan Station pho in 3 minutes with wedding shumai: Mibundang

Mibundang Dongtan Station Branch is a pho restaurant on the ground floor of a shopping arcade near Dongtan Station in Hwaseong, Gyeonggi. On a weekday evening, the writer and her boyfriend ordered brisket pho, thinly sliced brisket pho and wedding shumai (fried shrimp dim sum). Thanks to the open kitchen, the pho arrived in 3 minutes, and the broth, said to be simmered with Korean herbal ingredients, tasted deep and was easy on the stomach. Counter seats for solo diners and thoughtful amenities, down to hair ties and mouthwash, make Mibundang Dongtan Station Branch a standout pho spot.

Dongtan Paragon hotpot date, sesame vs garlic sauce: Lao Chongqing

Lao Chongqing Hotpot (라오충칭훠궈) is a Chongqing-style hotpot restaurant on the first floor of the Paragon building between the South and North Plazas in Dongtan, Hwaseong. On a booked dinner date for two, the order was a half-and-half pot of beginner-level Chengdu mala red broth and Chongqing beef rib broth, fresh pork neck, lamb belly, vegetables and guobaorou (sweet and sour fried pork), for 94,700 won in total. The Chongqing red broth was sold out, but Lao Chongqing Hotpot's fresh ingredients stayed delicious to the last bite.

The European Haenggung Main Branch is a wood-fired pizza and pasta restaurant on the craft workshop street in Haenggung-dong, Suwon. The writer and a friend booked through Catchtable, parked at the Hwahongmun public parking lot, browsed the Haenggung-dong alleys on the walk down, and ate the signature salsiccia ravioli and the basil burrata pizza. With good food and a European-style atmosphere, The European Haenggung Main Branch is worth recommending for a date or a get-together.

Lamb rib restaurant in Dongtan: 4 lamb cuts compared at Theo Cuisine

Theo Cuisine Dongtan Lake Park is a lamb rib restaurant on the first floor of the Luna Gallery shopping complex at Dongtan Lake Park in Hwaseong, Gyeonggi. Two diners ordered French rack, lamb loin, chuck flap and shoulder rack, all grilled and rested by Theo Cuisine staff, and the lamb loin was the most tender and juiciest cut. Theo Cuisine Dongtan Lake Park is a polished spot for comparing lamb cuts on a date, a family dinner or a work dinner.

Mangpo, Suwon barley rice buffet for summer appetite loss: Boriook

Boriook Main Branch (보리옥 본점) is an all-you-can-eat barley rice Korean restaurant near Fantasium in Mangpo, Yeongtong-gu, Suwon. On a weekday afternoon when the summer heat had killed the writer's appetite, the writer walked in without a reservation and ordered the barley rice set and the grilled gochujang pork set. The meal also included namul (seasoned vegetable) bibimbap from the self-bar, cheonggukjang (fermented soybean stew), sweet potato fritter refills, and puffed rice snacks with plum tea for dessert. Boriook Main Branch is a good fit for a hearty, healthy meal when summer has dulled your appetite.

Hongrad Mangpo Station Branch is a large vintage-style café on the 4th floor of a building near Mangpo Station in Yeongtong-gu, Suwon. On a visit with a friend, the writer ordered an iced americano, peach oolong tea and kaya jam toast, and found the sofa seating (from solo seats to group tables), the in-store restroom and the blankets comfortable. For a long catch-up or a laptop session near Mangpo Station, Hongrad Mangpo Station Branch is a great fit.

Dongtan shabu-shabu, mild clear broth for an upset stomach: Deungchon

Deungchon Shabu Kalguksu Gran Passage Branch (등촌샤브칼국수 그랑파사쥬점) is a shabu-shabu and kalguksu (knife-cut noodle soup) restaurant on the 2nd floor of the Gran Passage Green Zone by Dongtan Lake Park in Hwaseong. On a weekend evening with an upset stomach, the writer skipped the usual spicy mushroom kalguksu, ordered the clear shabu kalguksu set for two, added 190g of shabu beef and finished with noodles and fried rice. Deungchon Shabu Kalguksu's clear broth is mild and clean, an easy meal on a sensitive stomach.

Dongtan Station summer shabu-shabu, refreshing spicy broth: Pyeonbaek

Pyeonbaek Hoegwan Dongtan Branch (편백회관 동탄점) is an all-you-can-eat restaurant for cypress-box steamed meat and vegetables, rice paper wraps and shabu-shabu, on the 2nd floor of Granvia Star at Dongtan Station in Hwaseong, Gyeonggi. On a hot day with no appetite, the blogger started with the cypress steam, then moved on to shabu-shabu in the popular bonito + spicy half-and-half broth; the spicy side was milder than expected, punchy and refreshing like bean sprout soup. The plan was a light meal, but it ended too full for the closing porridge: an easy, reliable summer meal out at Pyeonbaek Hoegwan, with lunch at ₩16,900 and dinner at ₩19,900 for 100 minutes.

Dongtan hot pot date: fried gyoza & cheese risotto at Horangigul

Horangigul (호랑이굴) at Lotte Department Store Dongtan is a Japanese-style gopchang and daechang (beef intestine) hot pot, or motsunabe, restaurant in the B1 food hall in Dongtan, Hwaseong. On a weekday at 5:30 pm, the writer and her boyfriend shared the medium-spicy gopchang hot pot (17,500 won) and the juicy fried gyoza set (10,900 won), then turned the leftover broth into cheese risotto (4,000 won). With a clean, refreshing broth, Horangigul is an easy choice in Dongtan for a date or a family meal.

Dongtan chicken stew restaurant for Boknal with ginseng: Mandori

Mandori Dongtan Jikyeongjeom (만도리 동탄직영점) is a dakdoritang (spicy braised chicken stew) restaurant near Neung-dong and Byeongjeom in Dongtan, Hwaseong. On Boknal, the hottest days of summer, two of us shared a whole boneless aged kimchi chicken stew for ₩45,000; the owner added a baby ginseng for the occasion, and the thick, kimchi-forward sauce had us finishing a bowl of black rice in no time. With a large parking lot and private group rooms, Mandori Dongtan is a good pick for a Boknal meal, a family gathering or a company dinner.

Kalguksu spot in Dongtan, Hwaseong: late lunch with Mom at Seonbi

Seonbi Kalguksu Hallym University Dongtan Sacred Heart Hospital branch is a kalguksu (knife-cut noodle soup) restaurant on the first floor of the Hallym University Dongtan Sacred Heart Hospital building in Seogu-dong, Dongtan, Hwaseong, Gyeonggi. On a late lunch with her mother, the writer ordered Jeonju-style kalguksu, the summer bibim kalguksu (spicy mixed noodles) and 10 half-kimchi, half-meat dumplings, and especially liked the free yeolmu (young radish kimchi) barley rice at the self-serve bar and the mix of thin and thick noodles at Seonbi Kalguksu. For a light but filling lunch in Seogu-dong, solo or with a group, Seonbi Kalguksu is a good fit.
