Yeongdeungpo bakery café with stroller room and baby chairs: BYWAY

In short

BYWAY BAKERS Yeongdeungpo Branch is a large bakery café within walking distance of Yeongdeungpo-gu Office Station in Seoul. The writer visited BYWAY BAKERS with a baby in a deluxe stroller, ordered the mango yogurt wakppu salt bread (salt bread you crack open), an egg tart, watermelon juice and a decaf iced Americano, and found the long tables and baby chairs made the stay easy. Verdict: the mango yogurt wakppu salt bread, packed with fresh mango, is more than an Instagram look because the salt bread itself is delicious.

Every time I scrolled through my social feeds lately, the mango yogurt wakppu salt bread 🥐 kept catching my eye. The look of it was so overwhelming that I just had to try it. Luckily, BYWAY BAKERS near my home sells it, so I went right over!

If you're searching for a good café near Yeongdeungpo-gu Office Station, or planning a weekend bakery crawl in Yeongdeungpo, put this on the first page of your list. It's near my home, so I'd stopped by before whenever I wanted coffee and bread. This was my first time since having the baby 😭😭😭

BYWAY BAKERS is also famous for its financiers (small French almond butter cakes). They're running an event where you get a pretty package box for free if you buy a certain number of financiers or egg tarts, so I thought it would be perfect for a small gift 🎁

On one side of the shop there was a cute wooden stand promoting watermelon juice 🍉. Seeing the boxes and the scale below it made me trust it more, as if they really use high-sugar premium Korean watermelons.

Can you bring a stroller to BYWAY BAKERS?

BYWAY BAKERS Yeongdeungpo Branch is spacious, with long table seating where I could sit with a deluxe stroller parked beside me, and baby chairs are provided too. The moment you open the door, the open, airy feel is really comfortable.

We came with a deluxe stroller, and there happened to be long tables, so I could tuck the stroller right beside me and sit comfortably. When you go out with a baby you can't help feeling self-conscious, but the space is wide and there are baby chairs, so I felt at ease 🥹

Hygiene at BYWAY BAKERS: sanitized tongs

At big bakery cafés like this I quietly worry about hygiene, but at BYWAY BAKERS the tongs were carefully kept sanitized before use. It seems small, but details like this really raise my trust in a shop...

What breads does BYWAY BAKERS sell?

The display cases at BYWAY BAKERS are packed with the signature salt bread, plus bagels, egg tarts, baked sweets and many kinds of financiers. Seeing all that bread made my heart swell, and I fell into a happy dilemma over what to pick. My eyes were spinning.

It's near home, so I drop in like a sparrow at a rice mill whenever I crave good bread, and the lineup is always so solid that this bread lover's heart goes wild. The titles "Yeongdeungpo bakery favorite" and "Yeongdeungpo-gu Office dessert" aren't there for nothing.

Honestly, I'm sensitive to the eggy smell of eggs, so I almost never pay for an egg tart first. But I remembered enjoying the egg tart here before, and seeing those golden, hefty tarts that looked freshly baked in the case... I just couldn't walk past, so I picked one up as if in a trance.

The financiers also come in a huge variety, and I've tried every one except the pecan pie financier. I hesitated a little, but I'll eat you next timeee 😋

Wakppu salt bread: mango or fresh blueberry?

The signature item pushed hardest all around BYWAY BAKERS was, of course, my target: the "wakppu salt bread."

At the time of my visit there were two kinds, mango yogurt wakppu salt bread and fresh blueberry yogurt wakppu salt bread. We're tangy-sweet mango lovers, so we picked mango without a second thought.

What we ordered and how long the wait was

  • Mango yogurt wakppu salt bread
  • Egg tart
  • Watermelon juice
  • Decaf iced Americano

It was a weekday daytime and there were quite a few customers, but the staff member was super kind. They told us the wakppu salt bread would take about 10–15 minutes and explained in detail how to eat it. Luckily it came out faster than expected, so we didn't wait long.

How do you eat the mango yogurt wakppu salt bread?

The mango yogurt wakppu salt bread comes in a mango-shaped box with disposable plastic gloves, and you press it down firmly with a gloved hand to crack the chocolate shell and eat it. The cute mango packaging alone was striking 🥭. It comes in a tiny box as if they were wrapping up a real fresh mango.

They gave me disposable gloves with the bread, and at first I wondered why on earth I'd wear gloves to eat bread, but once I heard how to eat it, it all clicked.

When you press down with a gloved hand, the chocolate shell cracks crisply open, like smashing a toy wakppu ball (a toy ball you crack open), and it's surprisingly satisfying 😆😆😆 Such catharsis, hahaha. Enjoying a little event before even eating made me even more excited, yaaay. With a fun moment right before eating, I think it would also be great for couples on a date.

Just for Instagram? How the mango wakppu really tastes

The mango yogurt wakppu salt bread is packed with fresh mango with no gaps, and the yogurt cream is tangy enough that I never got tired of it to the end. It really is full inside, a true-to-looks filling.

Honestly, before eating I was a little suspicious that it might be pretty Instagram-bait junk (?), but with the first bite I canceled that thought. Fresh mango fills it with truly no gaps, and the overflowing yogurt cream is amazing... Cream that's just sweet gets tiresome fast, but with a tangy yogurt base I could finish it feeling fresh... haha.

Most surprising of all, the salt bread underneath holding everything up is itself delicious, crispy outside and moist inside!!! Since the bread itself is good, the synergy with the toppings was enormous.

How does the BYWAY BAKERS egg tart taste?

The BYWAY BAKERS egg tart was a bit sweeter in style, but crispy outside and moist inside, so it was good. Personally, I have a favorite egg tart place in Bangbae, but it's far and I can't go often, and the BYWAY BAKERS egg tart comes close on its heels 🤣

I'll definitely take the baby again soon 😋
