Sokcho bakery café where kids begged for potato bread: Bultan

In short

Sokcho Bultan Gamja Bread Main Store (속초불탄감자빵) is a potato bread bakery café on Haksapyeong-gil in Sokcho, Gangwon. Two kids who were indifferent to the idea of potato bread tried the in-store sample and asked for it themselves, so the family took home about 4 potato breads plus one jjondeugi (chewy Korean snack). With fluffy potato and a gentle butter aroma, Sokcho Bultan Gamja Bread is worth another stop on a family trip to Sokcho with kids.

Why I went looking for potato bread on my Sokcho trip

While searching for potato desserts in Sokcho, I ended up at Sokcho Bultan Gamja Bread Main Store (속초불탄감자빵), a potato bread bakery café on Haksapyeong-gil. What's the first food that comes to mind on a Sokcho trip? A lot of people say the same thing: potatoes. As soon as I arrived I ate all kinds of potato dishes, like gamja-jeon (potato pancake) and oksimi (potato dumpling soup). Then, while searching, I found potato bread.

I heard it was already famous as a top Sokcho bakery and bakery café, so I couldn't just walk past it.

Potato inside bread? Honestly, at first I couldn't imagine the taste. Something like butter bread? Or sweet like sweet potato bread? I'm someone who can't stand unanswered curiosity, so I decided to stop by on the way home.

What are the exterior and atmosphere like?

Sokcho Bultan Gamja Bread looks like a stylish, trendy bakery café from the outside. Inside it's bright and tidy, and good for photos too.

True to a trendy Sokcho bakery café, the exterior was seriously stylish and hip. It felt less like a plain bakery and more like a nice café to stop at during a trip.

The interior was clean and trendy, great for taking photos, and bright and comfortable overall. With a vibe like that, my satisfaction was already rising before I'd even eaten the bread.

Do kids like potato bread?

After one bite of the in-store sample, my lukewarm kids asked me to buy potato bread. So I packed up about 4 of them.

When I first asked the kids, "Want to try potato bread?", the reaction was as expected: meh. Maybe because of the word "potato", it sounded more like a side dish than bread.

But after one bite of the sample in the store, the mood changed completely.

"This is so good!"

In the end the kids asked me to buy it, which made me laugh.

So no hesitating: I decided to take about 4. Moments like this are what I remember from trips: starting with no expectations and ending up far happier than planned.

What does the potato bread taste like?

The potato bread has fluffy potato inside, with a light, mellow butter aroma. It felt like a healthy bread that works as a breakfast substitute.

Once I ate it, I immediately understood why it's famous as a top Sokcho bakery and bakery café.

The inside really was fluffy potato, and the texture was very soft. It wasn't just bread with potato added; it felt like the flavor of the potato itself was properly brought out.

The butter aroma spreads gently without being greasy, and it's mellow, so it's easy to eat without feeling heavy.

It especially felt like a healthy bread that's perfect as breakfast. It really suits people who want something light these days.

Honestly, after one bite I thought, "Why am I only finding out about this now?"

Is the jjondeugi worth buying too?

The store also sells jjondeugi (chewy dried snack) in several flavors. I tried one and it was surprisingly good. It pairs nicely with the potato bread as a travel snack.

And that wasn't all. The store sells jjondeugi, which reminded me of how often I ate it as a diet snack in the past.

They said there were various flavors, so I gave one a try.

It was surprisingly good, too.

It's a light snack for when your mouth is bored, so it's a great combo to buy with the potato bread. Easy to carry along as a travel snack too.

Packed with fluffy potato. The potato is slightly sweet, so good, absolutely the best. It seems fine for breakfast too, so I didn't forget to pack plenty.

Is it worth returning to on a family trip?

Both the taste and atmosphere beat my expectations, so I plan to stop by again without hesitation on my next Gangwon trip. It's an easy choice for kids and parents alike, so it suits a family trip route.

Overall, this visit exceeded expectations. I went thinking it was just an "unusual bread", but I was satisfied with both the taste and the atmosphere.

It more than deserves its place among Sokcho's top bakery cafés, and I can recommend it as a stop on a trip.

It's good with kids, and also easy to enjoy with parents, so it suits a family trip route.

If I come back to Gangwon, I'll stop here again without a second thought. The taste was that memorable.
