Gwangsan eel restaurant with easy parking and whole-eel soup: Yuil
In short
Yuil Jangeo (유일장어) is a grilled eel restaurant on Donggok-ro in Gwangsan-gu, Gwangju. After touring the National Museum of Gwangju in the August heat, the writer ordered Yuil Jangeo's eel set for two, which is pre-grilled in the kitchen and then finished over tableside charcoal, even standing the thick pieces on their sides, and added an eel soup cooked with a whole eel. With a wide private lot at the front and back, Yuil Jangeo makes an easy, restorative stop on a road trip.

A Gwangsan eel restaurant found after the National Museum of Gwangju
For summer vacation, I took a trip to Gwangju in Jeolla-do, a city with plenty to see and plenty to eat. The first stop on the itinerary was the National Museum of Gwangju, and after finishing the tour in the sweltering midsummer heat, my whole body felt drained of energy, and I really needed something hearty and deeply flavorful for stamina. Among the countless places to eat in Gwangju, I headed to Yuil Jangeo, an eel specialty restaurant in Gwangsan-gu known for being a comfortable place to restore your health.

Is parking convenient?
Yuil Jangeo has a wide dedicated parking lot in its own building. Being able to park without any stress when I arrived put me in a great mood from the start. The lot stretches out generously on both the front and back sides of the store.

The eel set for two, pre-grilled before it reaches the table
At Yuil Jangeo, once you choose your eel, they pre-grill it and set the table for you. We ordered the eel set for two. Eel has long been known as a top-tier stamina food, and it's common knowledge that it's rich in protein, vitamin A, vitamin E, and Omega-3 fatty acids, which help boost immunity. It's a perfect food for relieving fatigue and restoring energy during the harsh August sun!

Seeing the eel already pre-grilled, arriving just as the museum tour fatigue was starting to hit, it felt like I was getting my strength back just from looking at it.

The eel's thickness and plump flesh
Yuil Jangeo's biggest feature and point of pride is without a doubt the overwhelming thickness and plump flesh of the eel. Unlike typical eel, they only use high-quality eel with plump, well-fed flesh, so it looks fantastic once it's on the grill.

Because the flesh is so thick, there's real fun in standing the eel pieces up on the grill to brown even the sides, and the springy, tender texture that fills your mouth when you bite in is truly excellent.
Beyond taste and nutrition, another strength of Yuil Jangeo is that it's simply comfortable to eat. A professional in the kitchen uses strong heat to perfectly pre-grill the eel, so there's no gamey or fishy taste at all — it's very clean and neat, and the pieces are cut to a perfect bite-sized size.
The pre-grilled eel gets a bit more grilling on the tableside charcoal, which makes for a much freer and more comfortable meal than if it arrived fully cooked. Being able to decide the doneness yourself and adjust it to your taste was really satisfying. Whether you want it grilled crisp for nuttiness or prefer it moist, you can tailor it to your own palate.

A special sauce, as much as you like
Yuil Jangeo lets you dip the eel in their special eel sauce yourself, which makes it perfect for enjoying it exactly to your taste.

I love the savory depth of a sweet, salty sauce, so I dipped mine generously for a rich flavor, while my partner, who prefers the pure, clean nuttiness of the eel itself over the sauce, just dipped lightly to enjoy the plain flavor on its own.

Fully savoring the thick, mouth-filling flavor of the eel, we thoroughly filled up on stamina against the August heat.

The finishing eel soup, with whole eel left in
After thoroughly enjoying the grilled eel, we added an order of the rich eel soup that arrives bubbling hot. The long-simmered eel soup broth had no fishy taste at all, just very savory and deep, and mixing in a bit of warm rice let the carbs and the rich broth come together to spread a savory, deep flavor through the whole mouth.

In Yuil Jangeo's eel soup, whole eel is left in the pot uncut, so you can taste the tender eel just as it is. Eating a bowl of this rich soup along with a hearty eel meal in the midsummer heat, I felt like I could handle this summer's heat wave just fine.

Checking out the event notice and getting ready to dig in, I also read up on the benefits of eel. A little extra common knowledge, gained.
If you've enjoyed a fun outing like the National Museum of Gwangju in Jeolla-do's Gwangju and are looking for a proper Gwangsan-gu Korean restaurant, a solid Gwangsan-gu place to eat in a relaxed atmosphere, I'd recommend Yuil Jangeo, which fills you right back up with energy through its thick eel and deep flavor.
